Iowa to open 2012 season at Soldier Field vs. NIU

By Kevin Kelley -

The Iowa Hawkeyes will open the 2012 football season on September 1 against the Northern Illinois Huskies at Soldier Field in Chicago. The game is listed in the Hawkeyes’ Spring Prospectus (source).

Iowa leads the overall series against Northern Illinois 7-0. The two schools also played at Soldier Field in 2007. Iowa won that game 16-3.

The Spring Prospectus also lists the 2011 and 2012 football schedules for the Hawkeyes. In 2011, Iowa has non-conference games scheduled against Tennessee Tech, Pittsburgh and ULM at home and will travel to play Iowa State.

The only caveat to the 2011 schedule is a potential conflict with the date of the Pittsburgh game. On Monday, the Buffalo Bulls announced their 2011 non-conference schedule, which lists them playing at Pittsburgh on September 17, the same day the Hawkeyes are scheduled to host the Panthers.

In 2012, the Hawkeyes will face a non-conference slate of  Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Central Michigan at home and Northern Illinois at Chicago.
