Minnesota, Texas cancel 2015-16 football series

By Kevin Kelley -

The Minnesota Golden Gophers and Texas Longhorns have canceled their 2015-16 home-and-home football series, the schools announced Tuesday.

The two teams were scheduled to meet in Minneapolis on September 19, 2015 and in Austin on September 17, 2016.

A “contract impasse concerning video rights” was stated as the reason for the cancellation by Minnesota AD Joel Maturi. From GopherSports.com:

“We are extremely disappointed that the series with Texas will not take place,” said Minnesota Director of Athletics Joel Maturi. “Our institution, student-athletes and fans were very excited about having a nationally respected program like Texas on our schedule. However there are complex rights issues in play that are beyond our control. It’s unfortunate that a mutually acceptable resolution could not be found that would have allowed the games to be played.”

Replacement opponents for both schools were not announced, but it is likely that both will seek quality teams from BCS conferences.

Probably a good thing as far as the Gophers are concerned. It will be tough enough adding Nebraska to the schedule as a conference game. Minnesota has a long ways to go- I hope that things can be built up again.

The Gophers better quit playing North Dakota State as well, those Missouri Valley 1AA teams are just to tough.
