Oklahoma State, Purdue cancel 2016, 2019 football series

A 2016 and 2019 home-and-home football series between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Purdue Boilermakers has been canceled, Purdue has announced.

The two schools were scheduled to play at West Lafayette, Indiana on September 17, 2016 and at Stillwater, Oklahoma on September 14, 2019.

No reason for the cancellation was stated, but it may be due to the expansion of the Big Ten and the contraction of the Big 12. The Big 12 will move to a 9-game conference schedule in 2012 after Colorado departs. And there is the possibility that the Big Ten will also play a 9-game conference schedule starting in 2015.

With the addition of one conference game, Big Ten and Big 12 schools will only be able to play three non-conference games per year.
