Akron announces 2011 non-conference football schedule

The Akron Zips of the Mid American Conference have announced their 2011 non-conference schedule. The schedule features games at Ohio State and Cincinnati and home games against Florida International and VMI.

The Zips will open 2011 on the road at Ohio State on September 3rd. Akron is 1-6 all time vs. the Buckeyes. The last game in the series took place at Ohio Stadium in September 2008 with the Buckeyes winning the game 28-14.

Akron will host Florida International of the Sun Belt on September 10 before traveling to face the Cincinnati Bearcats on September 17 at Nippert Stadium. This will be the first meeting between the Zips and Golden Panthers.

Cincinnati leads the series against Akron 3-2. The Bearcats won the last meeting 17-15 at the Rubber Bowl in 2008.

The final non-conference game for the Zips will be at home game against the VMI Keydets, an FCS Team from the Big South Conference. VMI leads the series 1-0.

The MAC portion of Akron’s schedule will be released in the Spring. Akron will host Central Micigan, Kent State, Ohio and Temple and will travel to face Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH) and Western Michigan.
