Mountain West adopts Eight-Game Football Schedule, reveals New Logo

By Kevin Kelley -

MWCThe Mountain West announced that have adopted an eight-game conference football schedule starting in 2012. They also revealed their new logo.

The MWC will play a seven-game schedule in 2011 before moving to eight in 2012. That’s when Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada join the conference, while TCU departs for the Big East.

With the adoption of the eight -game schedule, MWC schools will be able to play four non-conference games each season. This helps schools bring in more revenue with extra home games, plus benefits Air Force who has to play Army and Navy every year.

So how will you determine who doesn’t play who each season? I’m assuming it will be on a rotational basis, but it would be better to add the one additional conference game. Also, am I the only one who thinks that logo is going to be the most horrid in College Sports?

I’m guessing they will do a rotational basis, but have protected rivalries for each school. For example, Colorado State would have protected rivalries with Wyoming and Air Force, so they would ALWAYS play each other every year. Nevada protected rivalries with UNLV and Boise, for example.

I mentioned this before, but I too hate the logo. Frankly, I’m surprised that the MWC isn’t getting sued for their logo. Go look at the current Doctor Who logo. It’s exactly the same with DW instead of MW and the colors are blue and grey instead of purple and grey.

That is one ugly logo, but at least they don’t have divisions named ‘Leaders’ and ‘Legends’

As far as scheduling goes, it’s a good move. The reason the SEC is able to look better year after year over say the PAC-10 is because the PAC-10 makes sure there are 5 extra losses in the conference by playing a nine game schedule (now Pac-12 with 6 extra losses) Against AQ schools, the PAC-10 traditionally outdoes the rest the AQ conferences (not a PAC-10 fan, just stating facts). If the MWC wants to try to rise, they need to make sure Boise and what ever other schools want to step up have ample opportunity to still schedule 2 AQs, a tougher Non-AQ and a gimme game on a yearly basis.

8 games was never on the table for a conference that includes Air Force. The Zoomies have always been opposed to the idea of not having 2 ‘true’ open dates (on top of their conference schedule, they also always play Army & Navy).

Agreed! This logo is pretty bad. The former one was much more memorable and marketable.
