Wisconsin Badgers announce 2012 Football Schedule

By Kevin Kelley -

The Wisconsin Badgers have finalized their 2012 football schedule, the school announced this afternoon.

Earlier today, it was announced that Wisconsin would open the 2012 season at home against Northern Iowa on September 1. The Badgers have now completed their 2012 slate with the addition of a home game against the Utah State Aggies on September 15.

Utah State and Wisconsin have met just once in their history. The Aggies beat the Badgers 20-0 in Wisconsin in 1968.

Wisconsin’s other two non-conference contests are at Oregon State on September 8 and home against UTEP on September 22.

Wisconsin kicks off the 2012 Big Ten season on September 29 at Nebraska. The remainder of UW’s conference schedule features Illinois (10/06), at Purdue (10/13), Minnesota (10/20), Michigan State (10/27), at Indiana (11/10), Ohio State (11/17) and at Penn State (11/24).

The 2012 Big Ten Championship Game will be played on Saturday, December 1 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Love the Badgers……..hate the cupcake non-conference schedule they play every year. Buck up and play some real teams. If they keep this scheduling up, they can be put in the same category as Ohio State. I’m fine with playing 1 or 2 tune up games, but no excuse for not stepping up and showing you can compete on the national stage by playing a couple of the top tier teams, as well.

The risk vs reward is part of the criteria for non-conference schedule. Why take a big risk of a loss early in the season, especially for a team playing in the Big Ten? The downside is much bigger than any upside. Some teams from weaker conferences may want a stronger early schedule to gain position in the BCS standings.
