Rice to open 2013 football season at Texas A&M

By Kevin Kelley -

Rice will open the 2013 football season at Texas A&M, MyFoxHouston.com has reported.

“We’re going to play a football game with A&M,” Rice athletics director Rick Greenspan told FOX 26 Sports. “We’re going to open the 2013 season up in College Station.”

Rice will travel to face the Aggies at Kyle Field on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013. The two schools haven’t played since a 17-10 Texas A&M win in 1995. The Aggies lead the overall series 50-27-3.

The agreement is for one game only, but Greenspan indicated Rice would “…have discussions with them about future games.”

Both schools will have to do some schedule shuffling. Rice now has five non-conference games slated for 2013 after last week’s news that the Bayou Bucket with Houston would continue in 2013.

The Owls are also scheduled to host Kansas (Sept. 14) and travel to Wake Forest (Sept. 7) and UTSA (Oct. 12). It’s likely that one of the road games will be moved or canceled.

As for Texas A&M, they were previously scheduled to open at Florida International on Aug. 31. But opening the season at home against Rice was an offer they couldn’t refuse. The Aggies also host SMU on Sept. 21.

Update (5/5/12): Rice has postponed their 2013 game at Wake Forest.
