Southern Miss to play at Arkansas in 2013

By Kevin Kelley -

Southern Miss Golden EaglesThe Southern Miss Golden Eagles will play at the Arkansas Razorbacks in 2013, USM announced today.

Southern Miss will travel to face Arkansas at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville on Sept. 14, 2013. The contract is for one game and it will be the highest payout ever received for USM.

“We look forward to the challenge of going to Fayetteville in 2013 to face a strong Southeastern Conference opponent in the University of Arkansas,” USM Director of Athletics Jeff Hammond said. “Playing quality opponents it helps with our national exposure as well as a new regional rivalry that allows our fan base an opportunity to see their team play. We are not strangers to playing teams in the SEC and now we can add Arkansas to that long list.”

Arkansas takes Louisiana Tech’s place on Southern Miss’ 2013 schedule. Since Tech joins Conference USA in 2013, the Bulldogs and Golden Eagles canceled the back end of their four-game series (2013-14).

The Golden Eagles are 34-106-3 against teams from the SEC, which includes Missouri and Texas A&M. Southern Miss has never faced Arkansas.

The 2013 non-conference slate for Southern Miss will likely be one of the nations toughest. USM hosts Nebraska on Sept. 7 (possibly in New Orleans), travels to Arkansas on Sept. 14 and then to Boise State on Sept. 28.

Southern Miss has one more non-conference game to schedule if C-USA sticks with an 8-game conference slate.

Arkansas now has two more games to schedule in 2013. After hosting the Golden Eagles on Sept. 14, the Razorbacks travel to take on Rutgers on Sept. 21.

I did not realize Southern Mississippi had faced an SEC Team 143 times. More surprising is they have won almost 1/4 of those games. So. Miss. will more of a test for Arkansas than some of those non-conference cupcakes they play. Go Hogs!

What a brutal schedule for Southern Miss in 2013. Glad Arkansas added them to the schedule, I’ve always wanted to play them.

We suffered a site failure this morning and had to restore from a backup. The comments that were posted today (Friday) were lost and could not be recovered.

“Hammond didn’t reveal what the payout for the Arkansas game, but said it exceeds the $900,000 given to the Golden Eagles for its road game against South Carolina in 2010.”

Too bad it’s not a permanent Little Rock game – would likely guarantee a sell-out since both teams’ fans would turn out. But alas, anything with any stature – other than, now Ole Miss – goes to F’ville. Thanks to Jeff Long, we will still get the North Dakota A&M’s and NE Missouri Tech’s.
