Nicholls State has postponed their 2012 season-opener at Oregon State due to damage caused by Hurricane Isaac.

The game was set for Saturday, Sept. 1 and was to be televised by the Pac-12 Network at 12 p.m. PT. A makeup date for the game has not been announced.

Officials from Nicholls State said the game could be played on Dec. 1 if the Colonels do not reach the FCS playoffs and the Beavers don’t play in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

“It’s extremely unfortunate that we will not be able to make this trip,” Nicholls State University Athletic Director Rob Bernardi said. “With the lingering effects of Hurricane Isaac, we do not want to put any of our student-athletes or staff in danger, so at this point, we feel like it is best to focus on the safety of everyone, and we’ll look into rescheduling the game at a later time.”

“It became apparent as the day progressed that the safety of Nicholls State’s team and personnel was a primary concern,” OSU Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis said. “Many of the Colonels’ student-athletes and staff are with family and there is a deepening concern about their safety in returning to campus. We will continue to discuss the possibility of rescheduling the game.”

The postponement of this game means that Oregon State will now open the 2012 season at home on Saturday, Sept. 8 vs. the Wisconsin Badgers. Nicholls State will travel to Mobile to take on South Alabama.

FBS games affected by Hurricane Isaac:

  • South Alabama moved their game against UTSA from Thursday to Saturday.
  • Louisiana Tech and Texas A&M postponed their game in Shreveport, LA to Oct. 13.
  • North Texas at LSU and Rutgers at Tulane are currently set to be played as scheduled.

Oregon State-Nicholls State Update (via OSUBeavers.com):

Oregon State has rescheduled its football game with Nicholls State for Sat., Dec. 1, at 11:30 a.m. PT. The game will be televised live by the Pac-12 Networks.

Both institutions reached an agreement to reschedule the game for 11:30 a.m. PT, Dec. 1, with the understanding that the contest will not be played should either OSU qualifies for the Pac-12 Football Championship Game or Nicholls State qualifies for the NCAA FCS playoffs. If either of those scenarios unfolds the game will be canceled and the contract becomes null and void.

I am skeptical of Getting a southern team to Corvalis in December. Tough break for OSU as they are looking as a .500 team this year and not having this game could be the difference between making a bowl or staying home.

We are not talking about LSU, Texas or Georgia Tech…
Nicholls State needs that $500,000 payday

Temple would be ironic. Oregon State canceled their home game with Temple to go play LSU instead back in 2004 I think it was. That seems too soon though. Both teams should be fine to play this game in December.
