Old DominionThe Old Dominion Monarchs will open the 2013 football season at East Carolina, The Virginian-Pilot has reported.

Old Dominion will travel to face East Carolina at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, NC on August 31, 2013. The game will be the eighth meeting between the two schools but first since 1940. The overall series is tied 3-3-1.

In order to schedule this game, ODU negotiated a three-way deal with The Citadel and ECU. The Citadel was scheduled to play at East Carolina in 2013, but the Bulldogs will now play at Old Dominion as part of the deal, sources told the Pilot.

East Carolina’s 2013 non-conference schedule also includes a home game against Virginia Tech (Sept. 14) and road games at North Carolina (Sept. 28) and NC State (date TBA).

Old Dominion now has eight games on their schedule and four of them are FBS teams. In addition to ECU, the Monarchs travel to Maryland (Sept. 7), North Carolina (Oct. 12), and Idaho (Nov. 9).

The Monarchs will play as an FCS Independent in 2013 and will become a member of the FBS in 2014 and will play a full C-USA schedule. In 2015, ODU will become an official member of C-USA and will be eligible to complete in the conference championship game and bowl games.
