Utah Utes announce 2013 Non-conference Football Schedule

By Kevin Kelley -

Utah UtesThe Utah Utes have announced their 2013 non-conference football schedule, which is highlighted by a trip to BYU.

Utah will open the 2013 season at home on Thursday, Aug. 29 against Utah State. The game will be the 111th meeting between the two schools. Utah leads the overall series 77-29-4.

On Sept. 7, Utah will host Weber State of the FCS. The Utes are 3-0 against the Wildcats after wins in 1978 (30-7), 1984 (52-16), and 2008 (37-21).

Utah’s final non-conference game of the 2013 season is at in-state rival BYU on Sept. 21. The Utes are 53-31-4 against the Cougars, including a 24-21 win back in September.

The two schools have played each other every year since 1946, but the series will take a break in 2014 and 2015 when Utah plays a home-and-home series with Michigan.

In Pac-12 play, Utah will host Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon State, Stanford, and UCLA. The Utes will travel to face Arizona, Oregon, USC, and Washington State.

That is a slight change from the Pac-12 future schedule grid that was released in 2010. Utah was previously slated to host Washington and travel to Stanford, but will now host Stanford and travel to Washington State.

I am surprised we didn’t try to get out of the BYU game. But with Weber State then a bye week before the rivalry game, Dr. Hill drew that up about as well as he could have without backing out.

Technically Utah is not replacing BYU with Michigan…or else Michigan would be coming to Utah in 2014, when BYU should be. They chose Michigan, and will replace BYU with someone else.

They added Tulsa and Michigan to 2014 and 2015. Dr Hill felt BYU and Michigan would have been “too much” to try and get bowl eligible with that schedule. Wisely he swapped out BYU with a Conference USA Team.
It is tough to blame him given Utah’s record since joining the PAC 12 so far over 2 seasons we are 4-10 in the PAC 12. That is without STANFORD and OREGON over the last 2 years. That would be another 4 losses :(
Luckily we have WSU instead of those teams or we would have been 2-12…BRUTAL!

I have faith Dr Hill can schedule us to bowl eligibility.

      1. Drop BYU, Michigan and anyone that could potentially beat us. We already play Oregon, USC and Stanford. Beat those teams and that will impress the country.

      2. Add teams like Tulsa, Utah State and a 1AA that we can beat and get off to a 3-0 start. At that point just go 3-6 in the PAC and we qualify for either The Sun, Las Vegas or New Mexico Bowl!
