The Florida State Seminoles and the Oklahoma State Cowboys will meet in the 2014 Cowboys Classic, ESPN announced today.

FSU and OSU will square off at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014. The game will be the fifth meeting between the two schools and third at a neutral site.

The last time the Seminoles and Cowboys met was in the 1985 Gator Bowl. FSU won that game 34-23. Florida State also beat Oklahoma State 25-17 in Stillwater in 1977 and 38-20 in Tallahassee in 1978. The Cowboys won the very first meeting 15-6 in the 1958 Bluegrass Bowl in Louisville, KY.

“We are pleased to be playing Oklahoma State and with the exposure the game will provide our program and our university,” said Florida State Director of Athletics Randy Spetman. “I know that our fans will be excited about visiting Texas Stadium and the Dallas area. It is a football venue that is second to none.

“The announcement of this game is timely for Florida State in that we have in the past few weeks begun a determined effort to regularly schedule high profile non-conference football opponents. We are in the preliminary stages of exploring both home-and-home and neutral site games with prominent programs in the near future.”

Florida State now has three non-conference games scheduled for 2014. After opening against Oklahoma State, the Seminoles host The Citadel on Sept. 13 and Florida on Nov. 29.

Oklahoma State also has three games set for 2014. The Cowboys host UTSA on Sept. 13 and are also slated to host McNeese State on a date to be announced, likely Sept. 6.

Also today, ESPN and the Dallas Cowboys announced an extension for the Cowboys Classic through the 2024 season. Next years matchup will pit LSU vs. TCU, while a second contest in 2014 features Texas vs. UCLA. Matchups for 2015 through 2024 are to be determined.

Good show; this past decade’s up-and-comer versus 1980’s up-and-comer, although it would be better if a school that actually needed to recruit Texas played in this game.
