Georgia Tech adds Alabama A&M to 2013 football schedule

Georgia TechThe Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have added the Alabama A&M Bulldogs to their 2013 football schedule, the school announced today.

Georgia Tech will host Alabama A&M at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta on Nov. 23, 2013. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.

A&M is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the FCS. The Bulldogs finished the 2012 season 7-4 overall and 6-3 in the SWAC.

Georgia Tech opens the 2013 season against FCS school Elon on Aug. 31. Having two FCS schools on their 2013 schedule means that the Yellow Jackets will need to win seven games to qualify for a post-season bowl game.

On Oct. 12, the Yellow Jackets travel to face the BYU Cougars. The game is the second in a home-and-home series that started on Oct. 27, 2012 in Atlanta. The two schools were originally slated to play four games, but Tech reduced it to two games earlier this year.

After hosting Alabama A&M on Nov. 23, Georgia Tech will welcome in-state rival Georgia to Bobby Dodd Stadium on Nov. 30.

In ACC play, Georgia Tech is tentatively slated to host Clemson, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech and travel to face Duke, Miami, and Virginia. The Jackets will also play new ACC member Pittsburgh and an Atlantic Division team to be determined.

I hate this ….
Why do FBS schools have to player FCS schools???
There is no need to lower your stantards by doing this!!!
Why not play Idaho or New Mexico State???
Would love to see the NCAA ban this in 2014 when the post season structure in changed to a play off…. You want to play an FCS school you wont play in a bowl/play off games….

There is one reason, one easy win against the FCS, and a good rating in the BCS Rankings.

Second there is a whole Conference which have a duty to play one FCS Opponent every year – The SEC!

amen Seth
stop the hate…beat the SEC then talk all the crap you want
Which since it is Alabama I hope you do Notre Dame!
Sad thing is the Pac 12, Big 12 and Big 10 have not been able to do it so you have to get the old independent to make an attempt

College’s schedule FCS schools for two reasons.

1. It’s ‘usually’ an easy game that the team can use as practice.

2. It provides the smaller FCS school with a big payday that benefits their entire athletic department. These FCS schools get anywhere from 500,000 to 1M for playing an FBS opponent depending on what the two schools negotiate.

And it enables most FBS teams to get 7 home games on a 12 game schedule. If FBS/FCS games were banned, there would be somewhere around 100 (maybe more) teams with a hole to fill on the schedule.

50 of those teams would have to take it on the road.

Chill out, everyone. The reason ACC teams like Georgia Tech and and Miami are scheduling FCS teams this year is because after Notre Dame joined, the ACC decided to abandon the 9-game conference schedule and stick with the 8-game schedule. That leaves open a non-conference game that needs to be filled, and most FBS teams by now have filled their NC schedules.

Why does a team with 5 – 7 record against FBS team are going bowling? They lost against:
Virginia Tech, Middle Tennessee State, Miami (Fla.), Clemson, Brigham Young and Georgia in the regular Season.

Next year they have two non-FBS OOC game, Elon and Alamabam A&M.

One win against an FCS team counts for bowl eligibility. Tech filed for a waiver to get a bowl if they were 6-7, since they were 6-6 and then lost in the ACC title game. They wouldn’t have played that game if Miami hadn’t backed out.
