Colorado, Nebraska schedule four-game football series

By Kevin Kelley -

The Colorado Buffaloes and the Nebraska Huskers will renew their football rivalry with a four-game series set for 2018, 2019, 2023, and 2024, the two schools announced today.

Nebraska will host the first game of the series at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Sept. 8, 2018. The series will then shift to Folsom Field in Boulder on Sept. 7, 2019.

After a three year break, the series will resume in Boulder on Sept. 9, 2023. The Cornhuskers will then host the final game of the series on Sept. 7, 2024.

“There is a lot of great history between Nebraska and Colorado on the football field, so I think this will be an outstanding series for both schools,” Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini said. “I think our fans will enjoy the matchups, particularly those in Western Nebraska who can make the short drive out to the games in Colorado.”

Per terms of the contract, the home team will pay the visiting team $300,000 for each of the games. If either team wishes to cancel any game, there will be a $1 million buyout.

Colorado and Nebraska have met on the gridiron a total of 69 times, with the Cornhuskers holding the series lead at 49-18-2. The two former conference rivals had played 63 straight years in a row dating back to 1948 until Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten and Colorado for the Pac-12.

“We are pleased to add another quality opponent to our future non-conference schedule,” Nebraska Associate A.D. for Football Jeff Jamrog said. “It is great to have future games with both Colorado and Oklahoma, two of our long-time rivals in the Big Eight and Big 12 conferences. Coach Osborne, Shawn Eichorst and Mike Bohn (Colorado A.D.) all put a lot of work into making this series happen, and it is good to have this finalized.”

Colorado now has three non-conference opponents for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The Buffaloes face Colorado State in Denver in both seasons, while also hosting San Jose State in 2018 and UMass in 2019.

The addition of Colorado is the first opponent scheduled for Nebraska in 2018. In 2019, the Cornhuskers also host South Alabama and Northern Illinois.

The matchup between Colorado and Nebraska is the first scheduled non-conference game for both schools in 2023 and 2024.

What a waste of 4 non-conference games for Nebraska. NU should be playing teams in Texas, Florida and California for recruiting purposes.

Well said and I agree 100%. Looking at NU’s OOC games through the next 11 years, there is only 1 game in California (Fresno State, 2014) 1 game in Florida (Miami, 2015) and zero in Texas. NU needs more national exposure if they want to become relevant again.

CU is not a rivalry, a rivalry means a team that can actually give us a challenge. We have dominated them 99% of the time. Oklahoma is more of a rivalry, and Colorado can’t even win to save themselves. Lousy decision to waste our time.

Go Ducks, I know it’s hard for you to comprehend, but there was college football before 2010 when you jumped on the Oregon bandwagon. CU and Nebraska have a long, long rivalry and have played more big games against each other than Oregon could ever fathom.
