Report: Michigan, Texas Discussing Future Football Series

By Kevin Kelley -

Michigan and Texas, two of the biggest names in college football, are discussing playing a future home-and-home football series according to a report from

Brian Davis of the Austin-American Statesmen then confirmed the report of talks between Texas and Michigan.

Michigan and Texas have only met one time on the gridiron. In the 2005 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the Longhorns nipped the Wolverines 38-37.

But fans looking to see these two schools meet on campus anytime soon will just have to wait. Based on the reports, and future schedules, the two schools are discussing dates in the 2020’s.

Michigan’s future non-conference schedule is full through 2017, and they also have a Power Five opponent scheduled for each season through 2023. They also have a series with Oklahoma set for 2025 and 2026.

Non-conference opponents for the Longhorns are also set through 2017 and Texas has a Power Five opponent scheduled through 2023. With both schools playing nine conference and three non-conference games (Big Ten moves to this format in 2016), their schedules are a little tighter. Most years, teams in these two conferences won’t want or need to schedule multiple Power Five opponents.

Whenever the two schools do meet, it will be nice to see another big-time, future home-and-home football series on the docket. Here are the series that each team currently has on the books:

Arkansas (2018-19), Washington (2020-21), Virginia Tech (2020-21), UCLA (2022-23), Oklahoma (2025-26)

Notre Dame (2015-16, 2019-20), California (2015-16), Maryland (2017-18), USC (2017-18), Ohio State (2022-23)

Good strategy for both schools. That way, at least one of them will get a win.

Two programs that deserve each other. More people care about both of them than either’s on-field results the last five years would indicate.
