The California Golden Bears and the San Jose State Spartans have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2019 and 2023, both schools announced today.

California will host the first game of the series at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on Sept. 14, 2019. The Golden Bears will then travel to face the Spartans at Spartan Stadium in San Jose on Sept. 16, 2023.

Cal and San Jose State haven’t met on the gridiron since 1996. The two schools have played 35 game and the Golden Bears lead the overall series 29-6.

“Anytime you can schedule a home-and-home series with a formidable local opponent it is good for both universities and their fan bases, as well as football fans in the area,” Cal head coach Sonny Dykes said. “Cal and San Jose State both have football programs rich in tradition and history, and we are excited to have them returning to our schedule.”

Cal now has two non-conference games scheduled for 2019. The Golden Bears are also slated to visit Auburn on Sept. 21.

San Jose State is Cal’s first announced non-conference opponent for the 2023 season.

“We are delighted to play Cal again, especially on a home-and-home basis,” said SJSU Director of Athletics Gene Bleymaier. “These games are good for our program and good for fans of Bay Area college football.”

San Jose State is also scheduled to host Tulsa and travel to Army in 2019. Cal is their first announced opponent for 2023.
