East Carolina, Old Dominion Schedule 2018-19 Football Series

By Kevin Kelley -

The East Carolina Pirates and the Old Dominion Monarchs have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2018 and 2019, both schools announced today.

In the first game of the series, East Carolina will host Old Dominion at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, NC on Sept. 29, 2018. ECU will then travel to face ODU in Norfolk, VA on Sept. 28, 2019.

East Carolina and Old Dominion first met on the gridiron in 1934 and have played eight times overall. The Pirates lead the overall series 4-3-1.

The addition of the series with ODU completes the non-conference schedules for East Carolina in both 2018 and 2019.

East Carolina is slated to open the 2018 season with back-to-back games at home vs. North Carolina A&T (Sept. 1) and North Carolina (Sept. 8). The Pirates then visit Virginia Tech (Sept. 15) before hosting ODU two weeks later (Sept. 29).

In 2019, ECU opens the season at NC State (Aug. 31), hosts Virginia Tech (Sept. 21), visits ODU (Sept. 28), and hosts South Carolina on a date to be announced.

“Everyone associated with Old Dominion football is excited to announce this home and home series with East Carolina. We had the opportunity to open our season in 2013 at East Carolina and were very excited with their game day atmosphere,” ODU Head Coach Bobby Wilder said. “We continue to try to schedule as many regional home and home series as we can so that our fan base can see great games at home as well as have easy travel to the away games. I am hopeful this is the start of a special series with East Carolina that we can continue for many years to come.”

Old Dominion now has three non-conference games scheduled for both the 2018 and 2019 seasons. In 2018, the Monarchs are also slated to host Virginia Tech (Sept. 22) and VMI (date TBA).

In 2019, ODU is set to travel to Virginia Tech (Sept. 7) and host Buffalo (Sept. 14).

This is great news for the local economy in northeastern NC. Thumbs up to ECU for making this happen.

Whenever the next conference shuffling happens, ECU should advocate for ODU to get brought up to the American. If they hadn’t dropped football years ago, ODU probably would have already been in the American. Norfolk-Richmond is a huge media market.
