The Akron Zips and the Troy Trojans have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2017 and 2019, it was announced on Monday.
In the first game of the series, Akron will travel to face Troy at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy, Alabama on Sept. 16, 2017. The Zips will then host the Trojans at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field on Sept. 21, 2019.
The 2017 contest between Akron and Troy will be their first-ever meeting on the gridiron.
“It is important for our football program and our fan base to have six home games every year at a minimum,” Troy Athletics Director Jeremy McClain said. “With NC State having to move our game next season, this is a great series for us against a Group of Five opponent.”
The addition of Akron completes the non-conference schedule for Troy in 2017. The Trojans open the season at Boise State on Sept. 2, host Alabama State on Sept. 9, and then visit LSU on Sept. 30, which is two weeks after they host Akron.
In 2019, Troy is also scheduled to host Southern Miss on Sept. 7 and travel to Missouri on Oct. 19.
Akron has also completed their 2017 non-conference schedule with the addition of Troy. The Zips are also slated to open the season at Penn State on Sept. 2, host Iowa State on Sept. 23, and travel to Appalachian State on a date to be announced.
In 2019, Akron is also scheduled to play at Illinois on Aug. 31. The Zips need two more non-conference games for that season.
