Same reason why an 0 or 1 loss team plays a 3 loss team for the conference championship in the SEC or ACC

It’s not like Bedlam is that traditional of a season-closing game. It’s only been the case since the Big 12 expanded (granted, 20 years). Still, for a long time OU was OSU’s #1 rival but OSU was OU’s #3, behind Nebraska and Texas.

what’s the big deal about a rematch? A few years ago Stanford and UCLA played a rematch in the Pac-12 title game

I hope their championship game backfires and they get left out of the playoff.
The Big 12 needs to fire their commissioner and either add more schools or disband.

More schools is the way to go.

Ideally they should add Boise State, BYU, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple. That way the Big 12 truly becomes a national brand.

Everyone of the comments made here is so correct. Adding teams to the conference is the only way to survive this mess that those that are in charge, are the very one’s which created this nightmare in BIG 12 land, and have taken a huge, huge amount of the enjoyment once had here in this very conference, and have made began to drive it down, and are doing their very best in making the entire Sports Programs so boring, and confusing to one’s very way of thinking, that watching other games, other than the Big 12, are sadly becoming the norm to watch, if one lacks interest in viewing our conference Sporting Events. Hoping that major changes mainly affecting those in charge, are done so soon to save our brand and very way of doing Big 12 Business. Thank you all for persevering this difficult time together relative to our Conference Athletics, and hoping together, by our just being there, showing our support, continues the great quality of Athletes, and Coaches, and the positive Administration Departments, with their hard devoted personal. Thank you my friends.

Wow…Fox and ESPN are losing $$$ for Big 12 football content through the first three weeks. Those games are absolutely wretched. Maaaaaaybe 3 semi-decent home games that would be (maybe) worth televising.

Agreed. In addition to their idiotic Championship game. There is:

West Virginia and V.Tech will both be ranked but that game won’t move the needle nationally.

Oklahoma vs. Ohio State – Obviously a big game.

TCU vs. Arkie. – Good game, but will draw blank stares nationally as no one besides a die hard fan of the game will be able to name a single player from either squad. on what their records are at the end of the season. Pre-season, neither will be ranked unless he media gives Arkie the standard “SEC West bump” for finishing 8-4 or 7-5 the season before.

Week 3 is interesting in terms of comparing teams from other conferences as they play 5 teams from other P5 conferences.

Texas vs. USC should get some major hype especially if USC is ranked and Tom Herman has a good showing against Maryland and San Jose State.

By my count I see:

10 games vs P5 out of 30 Non conference games.

Slim pickens in a conference that has lost a ton of respect across the nation and is considered the weakest of the P5 conferences by a long stretch.

I have to guess that the matchups in the final week before the championship game are games with teams from the feature divisions of the Big 12

I don’t think expansion will work for the BXII, they’re just performing CPR on a flatlining body at this point. Once the other conferences make the jump to 16 teams, the BXII will be raided.

– WVU most likely goes to the ACC so I can also see trying to get a foothold in Texas but possibly goes with Houston for the major market and more clean program
– Kansas and either ISU or UT go to the Big Ten (UT 100% if they want in, but they may want to go independent and these are the only schools with the academics to get into the B1G)
– The Oklahoma schools go to the SEC
– Now you’re left with the Texas leftovers and K-State with possibly ISU. You can put Tech, Baylor, TCU, and K-State (or leave one of the Texas schools out and put in ISU) and throw them in with the Pac-12 if they have the academics.

To be fair, we should have expanded with at least 2-4 teams (the case for Houston, BYU, Cincinnati, and UConn are compelling) so that there could be a smaller chance at a rematch in the championship game because there’ll still be 9 conference games.
West Virginia is an interesting case likewise with Texas with their tendencies to schedule 2 Power 5 opponents in non-conference. I wonder though if the Big 12 will ever return to being the best conference not named the SEC because it has been rough for this conference since realignment.
The non-conference matchups for 2017 look terrible for TV for the most part and why aren’t all the big rivalry games (Bedlam, Baylor-TCU, Texas-Texas Tech, Kansas-Kansas State) not on rivalry weekend?

BYU & Cincinnati (in my opinion) are the first two schools that come to mind for expansion. The conference needs to expand or unfortunately, I think the Big 12 will cease to exist at some point within the next five years.
