Report: UConn adds Clemson to 2021 football schedule

By Kevin Kelley -

The UConn Huskies have added the Clemson Tigers to their 2021 football schedule, according to a document in UConn’s Board of Trustees upcoming meeting agenda.

News of the future matchup was first reported by UConn Football Facts on Twitter:

According to the document, UConn will travel to take on Clemson at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 11, 2021. The Huskies will receive a $1.2 million guarantee for the game, per the document.

UConn and Clemson have never met on the gridiron.

The addition of Clemson would give UConn three non-conference opponents in 2021. The Huskies are also slated to host Holy Cross on Sept. 2 and travel to UMass on Oct. 2.

Clemson would also have three non-conference opponents lined up for the 2021 season. The reigning national champions have games scheduled at home vs. Wyoming on Sept. 25 and at in-state rival South Carolina on Nov. 27.

I’m not trying to be “that guy”, but if Clemson (a P5) is hosting UConn (a G5), is it appropriate to then state it as “Clemson adds UConn to 2021 football schedule”?

Interesting choice of OOC opponent for Clemson. When Maryland went to the Big Ten, their replacement was discussed amongst the remaining 13 ACC schools with Louisville and UConn being widely considered the two choices. Louisville was rumored to be preferred by FSU and Clemson because it was not “a basketball school”…or at least it had a better football profile/history/resume.

Funny how that works – similarly, the Pac-12 wants no part of BYU as a member but the Cougars play 11 of the 12 teams periodically, Colorado the only non-participant.
