Auburn adds UMass to 2020 football schedule

By Kevin Kelley -

The Auburn Tigers have added the UMass Minutemen to their 2020 football schedule, the two schools announced on Thursday.

Auburn will host UMass at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Nov. 14, 2020. The game will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams on the gridiron.

UMass will receive a $1.9 million guarantee for the game, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

Auburn now has three of their four non-conference games scheduled for the 2020 season. The Tigers are also scheduled to host Southern Miss on Sept. 26 and Alabama A&M on Nov. 21.

In SEC play in 2020, Auburn is slated to host Arkansas, LSU, Texas A&M, and Kentucky and travel to Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss.

UMass, an FBS Independent, now has seven games tentatively set for their schedule in 2020. The Minutemen are scheduled to host Troy (Sept. 19) and Army (Nov. 21).

The remaining five games on the docket for the Minutemen are all on the road: UConn (Sept. 3), Appalachian State (Sept. 26), Mississippi State (Oct. 17), Auburn (Nov. 14), and Liberty (Nov. 28).

Two thoughts. 1. is 1.9 M for a guarantee game close to the record? 2. If a coach demanded a FBS guaranteed win in 2020, the first call I would make is to U-Mass, shame on your Auburn. Three years can be a long time in college football and I hope U-Mass gets better.

I believe $1.9 million is a record. There have been two $2+ million guarantee games, but they has other stipulations. One was Florida paying Colorado State as part of McElwain’s buyout, the other was Nebraska switching a road game at Southern Miss to Lincoln.

So does this mean Auburn will no longer be playing Georgia on this traditional weekend.

The Georgia-Auburn game is usually the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in November. It moves around from time-to-time. This season it’s the 2nd Saturday, 2015-16 was also the second Saturday, but 2014-15 it was the third Saturday.

With this game they now have a scheduled game on both the second and third Saturday with the Georgia still to be schuled.

Kevin, love the site. Any rumblings on date & location for Auburn-UNC opener in 2020?

Kevin, the fact that the Auburn-Georgia game moves between the 2nd and 3rd weekend in November is only because of the quirks in the actual calendar. The Iron Bowl is Thanksgiving weekend and the Auburn-Georgia game is 2 weeks before. Even in those years you mentioned, that was the case. It’s most likely that the date for the UMass game is going to change.

Shame on Auburn?? From now through 2020, UMass plays 10 Power 5 games. Auburn is just 1 of those.
Two thoughts: 1. Auburn has never played UMass before, so why not? 2. UMass is an independent so, they need to schedule more games than most. By your rationale, UMass should never play a Power 5 school, right?

You’re right Kevin, it doesn’t make sense. Unless the SEC is futzing with the schedule again. Who knows?

I really enjoy the site. Thanks for what you do!
