UMass drops USF, adds FIU to 2017 football schedule

By Kevin Kelley -

The UMass Minutemen have made two changes to their 2017 football schedule at the request of the American Athletic Conference due to the effects of Hurricane Irma.

UMass was scheduled to play USF in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017. Due to a request by The American, that contest has been postponed and will now be played on a to-be-determined date in 2022 or 2023.

The USF at UMass game scheduled for Oct. 6, 2018 in Amherst will be played as scheduled.

To replace the postponed USF game, the UMass Minutemen have added a tentative game at the FIU Golden Panthers on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017. Should FIU qualify for the Conference USA Championship Game this season, the UMass-FIU game would be played in a later season.

As part of the deal, FIU has agreed to play at UMass on a to-be-determined date in 2020.

The American Athletic Conference also announced several changes earlier today that affected the 2017 schedules of UConn, USF, Cincinnati, East Carolina, and Houston.
