Toledo, San Diego State schedule 2020, 2022 football series

By Kevin Kelley -

The Toledo Rockets and the San Diego State Aztecs have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2020 and 2022, the schools announced on Thursday.

In the first game of the series Toledo will host San Diego State at the Glass Bowl on Sept. 12, 2020. The Rockets will then travel to face the Aztecs on Sept. 10, 2022.

The 2020 game will be the first-ever meeting between Toledo and San Diego State on the gridiron.

“We are very pleased and excited to add San Diego State to our football schedule,” said Toledo vice president and athletic director Mike O’Brien. “The Aztecs have a rich tradition of success in football. It will be another outstanding game for our fans to enjoy. We look forward to hosting San Diego State in the Glass Bowl in 2020 and also returning to the west coast in 2022.”

Toledo now has three announced non-conference games for the 2020 season. The Rockets are also slated to travel to Tulsa on Sept. 5 and to Michigan State on Sept. 19.

San Diego State is the first announced opponent for Toledo in 2022.

The Aztecs have now tentatively completed their 2020 non-conference schedule. Also on the docket are games at home against Sacramento State on Sept. 5 and UCLA on Sept. 19 and a trip to BYU on Nov. 14.

In 2022, San Diego State is also scheduled to host Arizona on Sept. 3 and visit Utah on Sept. 17.

In the days when Group of 5 teams are fighting to get noticed and into the Playoff, I am not sure having some of the best Group of 5 teams play other great Group of 5 teams in helpful. They need to play and beat Big 5 conference teams instead.

Maybe when teams like Florida and Alabama quit being cowards about their scheduling and start actually going on the road to play at places like Toledo and San Diego State, these matches would happen a little less.

The SDSU Aztecs have proven that they are ready. “Thomas Franks” and the “Inner Circle” have valid points….and so far, the SDSU Aztecs have delivered. You can maybe (?) fault their play, but their schedule was set – years ago. The team has to play the games.

They’ve beaten everyone that they’ve played this year. Everyone that is willing to play them. Some ranked. They have a 3-game winning streak against Pac-12 teams and have a winning Bowl record. Maybe you saw what SDSU did to Houston last year in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Holy Toledo does NOT excite me, but maybe we need a sacrificial lamb like most NCAA FBS Teams.

Toledo will be no pushover, they gave Miami,Fla a run for their money. They are well coached to do a great job of developing their talent. SDSU is a good team but those losses to a subpar South Alabama team show that the Aztecs still have work to do. Personally,I think they and Boise State would be good fits in the Pac-12.
