2021-24 College Football National Championship sites set

By Kevin Kelley -

The College Football National Championship sites for 2021 through 2024 were officially announced on Wednesday by the playoff organizers.

“When we created the playoff, we said we wanted to move the national championship game around,” said Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the College Football Playoff. “We have done that. We call it ‘ten in ten’—ten different communities will have hosted the national championship game in the first ten years of the playoff. The CFP National Championship is one of the most popular sporting events in the United States and we’re proud to bring the game to fans in different regions of the country.”

Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida will host the College Football National Championship on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021. The venue currently seats 64,767 and has hosted five Super Bowl games.

The 2022 College Football National Championship will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana on Monday, Jan. 10, 2022. Lucas Oil, which hosted Super Bowl XLVI, has a seating capacity of 62,421 and is expandable to 70,000.

The new Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California will host the National Championship on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023. The stadium, planned to open in 2020, will have a seating capacity of 70,240 and will be expandable to 100,000.

On Monday, Jan. 8, 2024, the National Championship Game will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. NRG Stadium, which hosted Super Bowl LI earlier this year, seats 71,795.

“Each of the four cities chosen met or exceeded our standards for selection,” Hancock said. “Each has a first-class stadium that our fans will enjoy, a great convention center, excellent hotels for teams and fans, and the communities have successful track records of hosting major events. Each city also has wonderful, supportive people who we rely on to host a successful game.”

This season’s National Championship is set for Monday, Jan. 8, 2018 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Next year, semifinal winners will meet at on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Surprised they have not added Charlotte to that line-up since as of late its only been mostly southern & a few Midwest teams in the championship game. This year is looking no different as of right now.

I think more games need to be held in outdoor stadiums in cold weather cities. Three cities stand out.

Green Bay – Titletown USA
East Rutherford – near NYC
Cleveland – this city really needs a CFP title game here because its NFL team has struggled for years; FirstEnergy Stadium is one of the best stadiums in the NFL, but because of the Browns’ struggles, it is the oldest NFL stadium never to have hosted postseason football above the high school level, a CFP title game would serve as a major morale booster to football fans in the city

Z Man,
I agree with you & even I thought they should host one in NY but the 1st week in January is very cold & putting college football fans through that does not seem the smartest business decision to make for ESPN or TV sponsors. People don’t want to come to a very cold climate to watch their team play for a national championship.I think putting it in Indy is fine due to a covered stadium. Not sure about Cleveland though, that city is on the decline fast (not bashing, just saying) & I doubt it would be a morale booster to football fans in that city unless The Ohio St was playing in it, Cleveland is an NFL/NBA city. I don’t think Cleveland fans would come watch Bama vs Clemson. Green Bay & NY would be great places to play NC but it needs to be indoors.

People from the schools and just general football fans go the championship games. You could build a 50,000 seat stadium at the North Pole and because its the championship game it would sell out. Plus a Big-10 school or Notre Dame deserves the opportunity every once in a while if the circumstances work out for an Alabama or Clemson to play a championship game in cold weather. It also is very interesting that very few SEC/ACC schools are willing to come North. Georgia’s trip to Notre Dame was the first time in nearly 50 years they played above the Mason-Dixon Line. If the CFP alternated settings every 3 years like they do with the semi-finals it would be very interesting. For example to play 1 year in Green Bay, then LA and in a dome the 3rd year, would let more of the country get to have the title game nearby and let all types of weather become a factor in the championship

Notorisousrunner,

I actually understand or respect where you are coming from but I don’t think you are seeing the big picture as a phrase everyone likes to use. For example, if the National Championship is played on a Monday night at (normally) 8:30pm, in New York, why would you want a cold weather, snow, snow flurries, a blizzard, wind, 10 below zero, everyone freezing their asses off plus fans who will not leave the stadium till 12:30-1am in the morning to play out a scenario of a national championship game? I also don’t see any BIG teams trying to come south to play unless its for a bowl game, plus Michigan paid off Arkansas to stay up north & play ND so please stop with the SEC/ACC don’t want to travel north. Nobody cares about its been 50yrs since Georgia has headed north, LSU was up there last year. There’s a reason bowl games are mostly in the south or out west, it is better weather & the snow birds have an excuse to leave the north. As for the north pole statement, if you want to be stuck to your seat for 4hrs or you want to watch a blizzard on TV where you might get to see 2-3 plays of the game on TV plus it will probably end in a 0-0 tie, have fun!!

cold weather football is real football, teams like Bama or Clemson have not played real football until they have played in the cold

Several of the greatest football games at any level have been played in very cold conditions

Take for example the Ice Bowl – which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. It’s an example of the Packers excelling when the weather is at its worst. Who was Green Bay’s coach then – one of the biggest cold-weather football advocates of all time, Vince Lombardi.

I don’t think any domes, retractable roof places, or sun belt cities should get any more title games after 2024 until cities like Cleveland (especially if the Browns still haven’t hosted a playoff game by then, which given current trends is still likely), Green Bay and East Rutherford have had chances to host title games. In fact through 2024 season, all 11 title games thus far will have been hosted in the Sun Belt and/or stadiums with a roof. The next 11 should all be played outdoors in the North. Which would open up the door to the game being played in Foxboro, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Landover, CIncinnati, Kansas City, you can even hold one in Denver.

Z Man,

Real football is real football, has nothing to do with the weather, if ESPN listened you they would be bankrupt. You are comparing NFL to college & there is a difference plus you want to go back 50yrs ago about an ICE bowl, if you really want the next 11yrs to be played north for the NC then I actually see teams saying screw it! We don’t want the NC, send us to Florida where the girl are hot & it is 79 degrees. Who the hell wants to send their team up north the 1st of January, Practice in 15 degree weather all week, be uncomfortable the entire game due to the COLD weather, fans are miserable, unpredictable weather, game ends at 1am so most people are asleep at home because the game gets to boring & half the fans have left the stadium. TV rankings sucks all because you want a NC game played in Vermont. Do you actually think if every NHL game was played out doors up north that it would attract the viewership it does now? The stands would be empty, wishful thinking for you but I don’t see the north playing NC games anytime soon, too much money is tied up in the CFP, you got Indy, be happy with that.

you are scared, I can see the fear in your eyes

you are assuming things, fans will come to the game regardless of the weather there is all kinds of things to do in the cold like shop in malls, go skiing, snowboarding, skating
