Iowa adds Colorado State to 2021 football schedule

By Kevin Kelley -

The Iowa Hawkeyes have added the Colorado State Rams to their 2021 football schedule, the school announced on Friday.

Iowa will host Colorado State at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City on Sept. 25, 2021. The game will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.

Iowa now has two of their three non-conference games set for the 2021 season. The Hawkeyes are also slated to play at in-state rival Iowa State on Sept. 11.

The Big Ten schedule for the Hawkeyes in 2021 was recently released by the conference. Iowa is set to host Indiana, Penn State, Purdue, Minnesota, and Illinois and travel to Northwestern, Maryland, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.

“Our approach to future scheduling is to continue to put our team in position to face the best competition each year in our non-conference schedule,” said CSU head coach Mike Bobo. “Iowa is a perennially strong Big Ten program that will provide a good test for our football program, and help prepare us for our Mountain West schedule.”

Colorado State now has three non-conference games set for 2021. In addition to the trip to Iowa, the Rams will host Vanderbilt on Sept. 11 and travel to Toledo on Sept. 18 (previously Sept. 25).

No return game to Ft. Collins? Not like this is a Sun Belt team Iowa is contracted with…..

Iowa doesn’t have room in their schedule for return games with anyone except ISU anymore. They want 7 home games each year which makes sense for Iowa.

Yep. Iowa alternates between playing Iowa State on the road and playing 5 road games in B1G play. Iowa could host another P5 team but to go on the road, they’d have to either play 6 road games or put the ISU series on hold. As a neutral observer, I wonder if the two teams would be willing to do something like only play 6 or 8 years out of every 10 to allow Iowa to broaden their scope a little bit (ISU and their fans don’t seem as hung-up on playing other schools).

Completely neutral observer: Iowa should try to flex their muscle here and get ISU to agree to taking two year hiatuses between H-H w/ the Cycolones. The Iowa-ISU rivalry game is already completely lost in the shuffle of other rivalry games.
