The four-team college football playoff is set to begin after the 2014 regular season, and the group that oversees the playoff has now invited 31 bowls to bid for the right to host semifinal games. They can also bid on other games to be played on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

It’s New Year’s Day 2013, the busiest day of the college football bowl season. Six games will be played today, beginning with two games at noon at finishing with the Orange Bowl tonight.
The first of two games at noon on New Year’s Day is the Heart of Dallas Bowl (noon ET, ESPNU). Purdue of the Big Ten takes on Oklahoma State of the Big 12. The 2012-13 college football bowl season kicks off today with the Gildan New Mexico Bowl followed by the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
The Gildan New Mexico Bowl pits Arizona of the Pac-12 against Nevada of the Mountain West. The game, which is played at University Stadium in Albuquerque, kicks off at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl will host the post-season bowl game that features the SEC and Big 12 champions, the two conferences announced this evening.
The game will be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, with the first matchup taking place on January 1, 2015.
Champions from the SEC and Big 12 will face off against one another unless one or both of them are selected to play in the four-team college football playoff. If that happens, “another deserving team from the conference(s) will be selected for the game.” Read Full Story »
