Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno will retire at the end of the 2011 season, he announced today in a statement. Penn State and former assistant Jerry Sandusky are embroiled in child sex abuse allegations.
Paterno, nicknamed “JoePa,” has been head coach of the Nittany Lions since 1966 and is the only FBS coach to reach 400 victories. His current overall coaching record is 409-136-3. In bowl games, Paterno is 24-12-1 and has won two national championships (1982, 1986) and three Big Ten championships (1994, 2005, 2008).
