  • Clear Your Schedule – ACC, Week 12

    Brian Wilmer - November 13, 2012

Duke-Georgia TechAnother week, another leader in the ACC Coastal division. The next batter up is Georgia Tech, ascending to the throne after a 68-50 shootout in Chapel Hill. The Coastal still has three teams who could make it to Charlotte, and two of those play each other this weekend. The Atlantic almost saw a new leader itself last week, but Florida State managed to hold on to defeat a game Virginia Tech squad in Blacksburg. The scenario remains the same for both the Seminoles and Tigers as it has been ever since Florida State lost in Raleigh. Clemson has to beat NC State in Death Valley, then hope for the seemingly impossible in a Maryland victory over Florida State.

If there is one thing this ACC season has taught us, though, it is that anything can — and will — happen in this conference. This week’s slate contains some key conference matchups and a few non-conference tilts, and the virtual car is full of gas for our regular trip around the ACC.

  • Clear Your Schedule – ACC, Week 11

    Brian Wilmer - November 5, 2012

NC State-Wake ForestAnother week of ACC play is behind us, and we’re still no closer to knowing who will make the trip to Charlotte on December 1. Week 11 provides another “elimination week” scenario for a number of teams, while one of the conference’s clubs will step outside of ACC play to take on a team with national championship aspirations. We’ll try to clear up the road to Charlotte for some of the contending teams, all the while realizing we may not be much closer to the answers until the final week of conference play. Before we break everything down, though, it’s trivia time!

Week 11 ACC Trivia (answer at the end of the column): Wake Forest and NC State first faced off in 1895 in North Carolina’s capital city. What was the final score of that game?

  • Clear Your Schedule – ACC, Week 10

    Brian Wilmer - November 1, 2012

Miami-Virginia TechIf there’s one thing we know about the ACC, it’s that we still know very little about what to expect from the season’s finish. After five (or six, depending) games, four Coastal teams each have two losses — and they LEAD the division. Clemson could conceivably win out and not take home the Atlantic Division crown, all because of their 49-37 loss to Florida State to begin their ACC slate. Maryland led the Atlantic just a couple of weeks ago, and they now find themselves in the middle of the pack and fighting for their postseason lives.

We still may not have all the answers after Week 10’s slate of games, especially with only five conference contests. Three ACC squads are already bowl-eligible, and a fourth looks to join them this week. As the march to Charlotte continues, let’s take a look around the conference for Week 10.

“Boston College is a fine program from an outstanding conference (ACC),” Gene Smith, Ohio State associate vice president and director of athletics, said. “This gives Ohio State fans a chance to watch their Buckeyes in back-to-back games against Pacific 12 and ACC schools.”

  • Clear Your Schedule – ACC, Week 9

    Brian Wilmer - October 24, 2012

Duke-Florida StateWhat a week in the ACC. The leadership of both divisions changed hands, two teams lost stars to injury and the Victory Bell got a new coat of paint. This week’s action features a Thursday night national broadcast, an out-of-conference battle, and the two division leaders facing off against each other. As we prepare for another wild week of Atlantic Coast Conference football, let’s take a run around the conference and see what to expect from Week 9’s slate of games.

    Duke (6-2, 3-1) at #11 Florida State (7-1, 4-1), 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU

Program guide: Jamison Crowder’s touchdown grab with 19 seconds remaining last week did so much more than just padding his and quarterback Sean Renfree’s stats (Renfree, by the way, became just the 20th quarterback in ACC history to throw for over 8,000 yards in his career in last week’s game).

The Monarchs have never played a team that was in the Football Bowl Subdivision at the time of the contest. In the past, ODU has faced East Carolina, Miami (FL), and UMass, but all three schools were in a lower division at the time.
