2012 Big 12 Football Schedule to be released “in the near future”

Big 12The 2012 Big 12 football schedule will be released “in the near future” according to Bob Burda, the Big 12 associate commissioner/communications.

The schedule, which includes both TCU and West Virginia, was delivered to the Big 12′s television partners today just before the Feb. 1 deadline. In a statement, the Big 12 said: “The Big 12 Conference has provided a ten-team 2012 football schedule to its television partners and expects to release it publicly in the near future.”

Memphis discussing series with Vanderbilt, has verbals with Kansas & Ole Miss

Memphis TigersThe Memphis Tigers are in discussions to play a future football series against the Vanderbilt Commodores, The Commercial Appeal has reported. Memphis also has verbal agreements to play Kansas and Ole Miss.

Memphis Athletics Director R.C. Johnson said that the Tigers could play Vanderbilt as early as 2013 if one of their currently scheduled non-conference opponents cancels. Those opponents are Arkansas State, Duke, Louisville and Middle Tennessee.

Texas Tech Red RaidersThe Texas Tech Red Raiders will open the 2012 season at home against the Northwestern State Demons. The date was confirmed yesterday when NSU released their 2012 schedule.

Texas Tech will host Northwestern State at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012. The two schools first and only meeting was in 2007. The Red Raiders pummeled the Demons 75-7.

Both schools are in need of non-conference games to complete their 2012 football schedules. How many depends on West Virginia’s lawsuit to leave the Big East and compete in the Big 12 in 2012.

Big 12Texas Tech President Guy Bailey is “very hopeful” that West Virginia will be in the Big 12 in 2012. Bailey spoke to RedRaiderSports.com in wake of the upcoming 2012 Big 12 football schedules.

“West Virginia has assured us they’d be in there,” Bailey said. “I believe them and I’m very hopeful… I think all of the realignment issues will be resolved in the next two weeks. I won’t guarantee it, but we are making progress.”

Report: West Virginia may cancel 2012 game at Florida State

West VirginiaThe West Virginia Mountaineers are in discussions to cancel their 2012 football game at Florida State, the Tallahassee Democrat has reported.

West Virginia is currently slated to face the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Sept. 8, 2012. FSU is scheduled to return the trip to Morgantown on Sept. 14, 2013.

UCLA Bruins to play Texas Longhorns at Cowboys Stadium in 2014

Cowboys StadiumThe UCLA Bruins will play the Texas Longhorns at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, the Los Angeles Times has reported.

UCLA and Texas are set to play on September 13, 2014. The Bruins and Longhorns have met six times with the series tied at three games each.

The two schools recently completed a home-and-home series. UCLA won 34-12 in Austin in 2010 and Texas won 49-20 in Los Angeles earlier this season.

Big 12The West Virginia Mountaineers have accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference, it was announced today.

West Virginia will become a full member of the Big 12 on July 1, 2012. Their current conference, the Big East, requires a 27-month waiting period before leaving. The release indicates that the Mountaineers will be able to bypass that hurdle.

TCUThe TCU Horned Frogs, who were set to join the Big East next season, have received an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference. Negotiations between TCU and the Big 12 are ongoing, but the move is imminent.

TCU has been a member of the Mountain West Conference since 2005. Between 1923 and 1995, the Horned Frogs were members of the Southwest Conference before it broke up and became what is now the Big 12. Their move will reignite in-state rivalries with Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech.

SEC satisfied with 12 football programs; no action taken on Texas A&M

SECThe Presidents of the current SEC schools met today to discuss future conference expansion. Texas A&M was the leading candidate to bolt their current conference, the Big 12, to join the SEC in 2012.

After the meeting, Dr. Bernie Machen, Chair of the Southeastern Conference Presidents and Chancellors, issued the following statement:

“The SEC Presidents and Chancellors met today and reaffirmed our satisfaction with the present 12 institutional alignment. We recognize, however, that future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions in the league.
