The schedule, which includes both TCU and West Virginia, was delivered to the Big 12's television partners today just before the Feb. 1 deadline.

The 2012 Big 12 football schedule will be released “in the near future” according to Bob Burda, the Big 12 associate commissioner/communications.

The schedule, which includes both TCU and West Virginia, was delivered to the Big 12′s television partners today just before the Feb. 1 deadline. In a statement, the Big 12 said: “The Big 12 Conference has provided a ten-team 2012 football schedule to its television partners and expects to release it publicly in the near future.”

What “near future” won’t mean is Wednesday, Feb. 1. That is National Signing Day for college football recruits and the conference would like to avoid a release on that day.

With West Virginia’s ongoing legal battle with the Big East, the 2012 Big 12 football schedule will probably be released next week. That may be enough time for the two sides to work out a resolution that agrees with all interested parties.

In the mean time, here are the links to our 2012 Big 12 schedules which currently list only non-conference games:

Memphis also has verbal agreements to play Kansas and Ole Miss.

Memphis Athletics Director R.C. Johnson said that the Tigers could play Vanderbilt as early as 2013 if one of their currently scheduled non-conference opponents cancels. Those opponents are Arkansas State, Duke, Louisville and Middle Tennessee.

The Tigers and Commodores haven’t met since a 1989 contest in Memphis. Vandy leads the overall series 7-5.

The Commercial Appeal also reported that Memphis has verbal agreements to play two games each against the Kansas Jayhawks and the Ole Miss Rebels. UM would face Kansas in 2015 and 2016 and Ole Miss possibly in 2016 and 2017.

Memphis’ future schedules are now littered with big time BCS programs. In 2014, Memphis is slated to travel to Miami (FL) and host Louisville. In 2015, the Tigers will host Miami (FL) and Missouri, travel to Louisville and face Kansas either home or away.

Then in 2016, Memphis returns the game at Missouri, hosts Louisville and then if the contracts are signed could face Kansas and Ole Miss.

The Tigers would then face Ole Miss again in 2017 and will host in-state foe Tennessee.

Last week, Memphis announced their 2012 football schedule. The Tigers open the season on Sept. 1 at home against the UT Martin Skyhawks.

The Oklahoma Sooners and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights are in discussions to play a football game in 2012 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Both schools are in need of non-conference games to complete their 2012 football schedules. How many depends on West Virginia’s lawsuit to leave the Big East and compete in the Big 12 in 2012.

The Sooners currently have one non-conference game on the books for 2012, an Oct. 27 home game against Notre Dame. OU needs two more non-conference games and could possibly need a third if West Virginia has to stay in the Big East next season.

Oklahoma previously had a non-conference game scheduled against TCU for 2012. But with the Horned Frogs joining the Big 12 in 2012, that contest is now a conference game.

Rutgers has four non-conference games scheduled for 2012: Kent State (Sept. 15), Army (Nov. 10), Howard (date TBA) and at Tulane (date TBA). The Scarlet Knights need one more game and two if West Virginia leaves.

Regarding the possibility of the Oklahoma-Rutgers game at MetLife, John Hoover of TulsaWorld.com reported today that “…an OU insider said that game isn’t likely to happen.”

Texas Tech President Guy Bailey is “very hopeful” that West Virginia will be in the Big 12 in 2012. Bailey spoke to RedRaiderSports.com in wake of the upcoming 2012 Big 12 football schedules.

“West Virginia has assured us they’d be in there,” Bailey said. “I believe them and I’m very hopeful… I think all of the realignment issues will be resolved in the next two weeks. I won’t guarantee it, but we are making progress.”

The Big 12 Board of Directors are scheduled to meet on Feb. 2, the day after they hope West Virginia’s lawsuit with the Big East is resolved. In any event, the Big 12 hopes to release their 2012 football schedule soon after.

According to Bailey, those schedules will include West Virginia. Bailey said the “…Big 12 has at least three preliminary schedules” and that the “…schedules feature West Virginia on them.”

When West Virginia’s 2012 conference is finally decided, it will leave the other conference scrambling to fill non-conference games. Big 12 schools currently have three non-conference contests scheduled, but will have to add a fourth if the Mountaineers reamain in the Big East.

On the other hand, if WVU heads to the Big 12, the Big East will be left with only seven members for 2012. That means each school will need six non-conference games.

In a conversation with WVIllustrated.com, Luck had the following to say regarding West Virginia's imminent move to the Big 12:

West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck says that “there is no question” that the Mountaineers will play a Big 12 football schedule in 2012.

In a conversation with WVIllustrated.com, Luck had the following to say regarding West Virginia’s imminent move to the Big 12:

“There is no question that we will be playing a Big 12 schedule in all of our sports for the ’12-’13 academic year,” Luck stated. “We are telling our coaches to begin their non-conference scheduling based on the Big 12. We are committed to the Big 12 and I have no doubt that we are going to be in the Big 12 for the ’12-’13 academic year.”

West Virginia is currently involved in a lawsuit with the Big East over the timing of their exit. The Mountaineers are hoping to avoid the Big East’s 27-month waiting period for teams that wish to leave the conference.

Apparently, Oliver Luck and West Virginia believe they will eventually win their case and head to the Big 12 on July 1. They have already initiated discussions to alter their 2012 schedule in preparation for Big 12 play.

Last week, the Tallahassee Democrat reported that West Virginia was seeking to cancel their 2012-13 home-and-home series with Florida State. The cancellation of this series would leave West Virginia with three non-conference games in 2012, which is necessary because the Big 12 plays a nine-game conference slate.

But it will cost the Mountaineers buy this series out. The 2012 game will cost them $500,000 and the 2013 game would be an additional $350,000. WVIllustrated also mentions that the 2014-15 series with Michigan State could be in jeopardy due to the same scheduling issues.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are in discussions to cancel their 2012 football game at Florida State, the Tallahassee Democrat has reported.

West Virginia is currently slated to face the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Sept. 8, 2012. FSU is scheduled to return the trip to Morgantown on Sept. 14, 2013.

Due to West Virginia’s move to the Big 12, the Mountaineers need to drop a non-conference game. The Big 12 plays a 9-game conference schedule which leaves their members three non-conference games per year.

If the FSU game is cancelled, the Mountaineers three non-conference games would be Marshall (Sept. 1), James Madison (Sept. 15; at FedEx Field) and Maryland (date TBA).

The Mountaineers are currently suing the Big East to leave the conference in 2012 rather than abide by the 27-month waiting period.

If the WU-FSU game or series is cancelled, WVU would owe Florida State $350,000 to $500,000 in buyout fees.

The TCU Horned Frogs are likely to play at the Texas Longhorns next Thanksgiving, Star-Telegram has reported.

TCU officially joins the Big 12 on July 1 and would replace Texas’ annual holiday weekend game against Texas A&M, who left the Big 12 for the SEC.

Although the 2012 Big 12 football schedule has not been released yet, both the TCU and Texas athletic directors have heard the Thanksgiving matchup is a possibility. Texas AD DeLoss Dodds said the scenario is “…the one I’ve heard.”

TCU AD Chris Del Conte stated “…they’ve given us about four different models to look at and now they’re putting them in the computer and trying to figure out how they’re all going to mesh. Each AD has to vote on two of them. More than likely the TCU-Texas game will be on Thanksgiving, that’s the one constant that we know.”

The Longhorns lead the overall series against the Horned Frogs 61-20-1. The two schools last met in 2007 in Austin. Texas won that game 34-13.

Prior to that contest, TCU and Texas played home-and-home every year from 1927 through 1995 as both schools were members of the old Southwest Conference.

The 2012 Big 12 schedule is expected to be released in the next few weeks. However, the current lawsuit between the Big East Conference and future Big 12 member West Virginia may delay the announcement.

The series would begin next year at Bright House Networks Stadium in Orlando. UCF would then travel to Norman to face Oklahoma in 2013. The games would be the first ever between the two schools.

In 2012, UCF is currently slated to travel to Akron and Ohio State and host Florida International and Kansas State. However, UCFSports.com also reports that Kansas State intends to buy out of the 2012 game with the Knights. The imminent cancellation of that game opened the door for negotiations with the Sooners.

Oklahoma’s only non-conference game scheduled for 2012 is Notre Dame. They were set to face TCU, but that will now be a conference game since the Horned Frogs are joining the Big 12.

The SEC has announced that they have accepted the Missouri Tigers as their 14th member effective July 1, 2012.

Missouri is the second school to be added to the Southeastern Conference this year. Texas A&M accepted an invitation to join in September.

Although no announcement was made, it is likely that Missouri will be placed in the SEC East with Texas A&M in the SEC West. That would keep the divisions balanced and keep a current member from having to switch.

The Tigers leave behind the Big 12, a conference they have competed in since it began in 1996. Prior to that, Missouri was a member of the Big Eight Conference from 1928 to 1995. Missouri won a share of the Big 12 North championship three times and won or shared the Big Eight championship six times.

SEC Release:

“The Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference are pleased to welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC,” said Dr. Bernie Machen, President of the SEC Presidents and Chancellors and president of the University of Florida. “The University of Missouri is a prestigious academic institution with a strong athletic tradition and a culture similar to our current institutions.”

“The Southeastern Conference is a highly successful, stable, premier athletic conference that offers exciting opportunities for the University of Missouri,” said Chancellor Brady J. Deaton. “In joining the SEC, MU partners with universities distinguished for their academic programs and their emphasis on student success. The SEC will provide our student-athletes with top flight competition and unparalleled visibility. We came to this decision after careful consideration of the long term best interests of our university. We believe the Southeastern Conference is an outstanding home for the Mizzou Tigers, and we take great pride in our association with this distinguished league.”

“I am pleased to officially welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC family on behalf of our presidents, chancellors, athletics directors, students and fans,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. “Missouri is an outstanding academic institution with a strong athletic program. We look forward to having the Tigers compete in our league starting in 2012.”

The West Virginia Mountaineers have accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference, it was announced today.

West Virginia will become a full member of the Big 12 on July 1, 2012. Their current conference, the Big East, requires a 27-month waiting period before leaving. The release indicates that the Mountaineers will be able to bypass that hurdle.

The Mountaineers should replace Missouri, who many expect to leave the conference for the SEC. Texas A&M left the Big 12 earlier this year and was replaced by TCU.

The departure of West Virginia leaves the Big East with only five football playing members. But the conference is expected to expand to 12 and is talking to Air Force, Boise State, Houston, Navy, SMU and UCF.

“The Big 12 Presidents and Chancellors are excited to welcome another outstanding institution to the Conference,” said Burns Hargis, Chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors and President of Oklahoma State University. “The addition of West Virginia, while expanding the reach of the Big 12, brings an impressive institution with esteemed academics and a proud athletic tradition into the Conference. This is another step in building a strong foundation for the future of the Big 12.”

“The Big 12 is a perfect fit for West Virginia University,” said WVU President Dr. James P. Clements. “It is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs, and has a great tradition of success. This is a very exciting time for WVU and Mountaineer nation. I am confident that the future of WVU athletics has never been more promising.”

“We are excited to add West Virginia to our exceptional lineup of Conference members,” said Big 12 Interim Commissioner Chuck Neinas. “They bring an excellent overall athletic program to the Big 12 and allow the league to expand into an area that boasts a passionate group of fans and alumni throughout its region.”

The West Virginia Mountaineers have applied to and been accepted to join the Big 12 Conference, The Charleston Daily Mail has reported.

An official announcement from the Big 12 has not been released. West Virginia would replace the Missouri Tigers, who are expected to leave for the SEC.

Earlier this year, the Texas A&M Aggies also left the Big 12 for the SEC. The Big 12 then replaced the Aggies with the TCU Horned Frogs.

If Missouri does leave for the SEC and West Virginia joins the Big 12, the conference would remain at ten teams. It remains to be seen whether or not the conference eventually expands to 12 teams and holds a championship game again. Possible schools for the 11th and 12th spots appear to be BYU and Louisville.

The future of the Big East is again in jeopardy with this latest report. West Virginia leaving the conference would leave the Big East with only five football playing members: Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Rutgers and USF. Last month, Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced that they were heading to the ACC.

Pending litigation, West Virginia would be subject to the same exit process as Pittsburgh and Syracuse. The Mountaineers would have to pay a $5 million buyout and give the Big East 27 months notice before leaving (2014).

Texas A&M has talked to Texas about future games, but the Longhorns have told them that their non-conference schedule is filled through the 2018 season.

Currently, Texas only has two non-conference games scheduled for the 2018 season, at Maryland on Sept. 1 and home vs. USC on Sept. 15. The Longhorns likely either have a verbal agreement for a third game or don’t want to play three BCS non-conference opponents in the same season.

The Longhorns and Aggies have met 117 times and have played every year since 1915. Texas leads the overall series 75-37-5.

Statesman.com also reports that Texas A&M “…has received no overtures from any in-state schools about playing future football games.” A&M President R. Bowen Loftin also told the paper that the Aggies probably won’t play “…any other Big 12 schools in football on a regular basis.”

Regarding the annual game against Arkansas at Cowboys Stadium, Loftin said that Texas A&M has “…no problem continuing the game there.”

The TCU Horned Frogs have accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference in all sports, effective on July 1, 2012.

TCU received an invitation from the Big 12 last week following the departure of Texas A&M to the SEC. The addition of TCU gives the Big 12 a total of ten schools.

“Joining the Big 12 connects us not only to schools with whom we share a rich tradition in sports, but also to schools committed to academic excellence,” TCU Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr. said. “Over the past six years, TCU has seen unprecedented success in academics and athletics.

“Participating in this conference allows us to strengthen the core of the TCU experience, which includes providing students with major opportunities in a personalized environment. It is very much in line with our overall goal to create a world-class university.”

TCU, currently a member of the Mountain West Conference, were members of the Southwest Conference before it broke up and became what is now the Big 12.

Last year, the Horned Frogs accepted an invitation to join the Big East Conference in 2012. They will have to pay a $5 million buyout for breaking that commitment.

TCU’s future football schedules will now change, as will members of the Big 12 and Big East. If the Big 12 doesn’t add any more members, it’s possible that TCU may simply take the place of Texas A&M on the conference schedules.

Negotiations between TCU and the Big 12 are ongoing, but the move is imminent.

TCU has been a member of the Mountain West Conference since 2005. Between 1923 and 1995, the Horned Frogs were members of the Southwest Conference before it broke up and became what is now the Big 12. Their move will reignite in-state rivalries with Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech.

The Big 12 was temporarily down to nine members after the Texas A&M Aggies bolted for the SEC. Reports indicate that the Big 12 could expand up to 12 schools, although Oklahoma and Texas prefer to remain at ten. Some of the schools mentioned for the 11th and 12th slots are BYU, Louisville and West Virginia.

Since the Horned Frogs committed to joining the Big East last year, they will have to pay a $5 million buyout. However, they will not be held to the 27-month waiting period since their Big East membership wasn’t official until July 1, 2012. That means TCU can start Big 12 play in 2012.

Two schools that will be held to the Big East waiting period are Pittsburgh and Syracuse, who last month accepted an offer to join the ACC. With the loss of those two schools plus TCU, the Big East is now down to six football members. That puts the conference on unstable ground.

The latest in conference realignment will also shuffle future football schedules for many teams. Just two months ago, TCU announced their Big East schedule for 2012. Throw that out the window for now.

Oklahoma State is the third BCS conference opponent for Clemson on their future schedule, not including their yearly in-state rivalry game with South Carolina. The Tigers face the Georgia Bulldogs in a home-and-home series in 2013-14 and then the Ole Miss Rebels in 2015-16.

The Cowboys have several non-conference games slated out to 2020, but Clemson now becomes one of the biggest. OSU does travel to Arizona to open the 2012 season and has a home-and-home schedule with Air Force in 2015-16.

Texas A&M was the leading candidate to bolt their current conference, the Big 12, to join the SEC in 2012.

After the meeting, Dr. Bernie Machen, Chair of the Southeastern Conference Presidents and Chancellors, issued the following statement:

The Presidents of the current SEC schools met today to discuss future conference expansion. Texas A&M was the leading candidate to bolt their current conference, the Big 12, to join the SEC in 2012.

After the meeting, Dr. Bernie Machen, Chair of the Southeastern Conference Presidents and Chancellors, issued the following statement:

“The SEC Presidents and Chancellors met today and reaffirmed our satisfaction with the present 12 institutional alignment. We recognize, however, that future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions in the league. We discussed criteria and process associated with expansion. No action was taken with respect to any institution including Texas A&M.”

What does that mean? Texas A&M likely won’t be joining the SEC in 2012, but they still could at any time in the future. Machen did say that “…future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions in the league.”

So it appears that the SEC will take a wait-and-see approach again on conference expansion. Or it could mean that they are waiting for a 14th, 15th or 16th school to apply for consideration.

The SEC also doesn’t want to “invite” a school to join and risk litigation from that schools current conference. The school must apply for inclusion in the conference and Texas A&M may not have done that yet.

Clemson, Florida State and Georgia Tech were three schools rumored this weekend to be interested in joining the SEC. But most analysts believe that the SEC wouldn’t add a school where they currently have a television market presence.

Other possible schools that could move to the SEC in the future include Missouri, NC State and Virginia Tech. The SEC currently has no school in Missouri, Kansas, North Carolina or Virginia.
