Good for both teams and as well as their conferences. Love to see these type of match-ups as it always helps sorts the strengths of the individual conferences. Good job Mississippi State and Minnesota on making this happen, hope others within your conferences can make match-ups like this happen.

Land-grant OOC matchups are especially good environments. This should always be a competitive game. They should pick up each other’s 2024 and go ’24 in Starkville and ’28 in Mpls.

I posit that this is a terrible match up. Minnesota is way out of their depth. They should in no way schedule a Home and Home with anyone from the omnipotent SEC. The very conference who’s lower rungs would dominate any other conference. The last time teams from these two conferences scheduled a home and home……..Oh, yeah. Rutgers swept Arkie.

Should be: “Minnesota is also scheduled to host Miami-Ohio and New Mexico State in 2020. BYU is the Gophers first announced non-conference opponent for the 2025 season.”

      October 27, 2016 at 9:08 am

Should be: “BYU realizes they’re not getting into a P5 conference, slam down their sixth Pepsi in self pity and continue future scheduling. Minnesota, disappointed they cannot add Akron to fulfill their P5 commits, begrudgingly signs deal with BYU.”

The reasoning as to why the B12 got cold on BYU is absurd. The LGBT complained they weren’t getting enough respect, and now that they are, they are now in the business of pooping on other peoples culture. The LGBT protested the inclusion of BYU because of their honor code barring homosexual activity. Last I checked, BYU didn’t allow sexual activity period…….don’t know why the LGBT thinks they are so special. They threw a March Madness tournament because one of their starters slept with his girlfriend. I think it’s silly but it is THEIR culture. It’s THEIR standards. You don’t have to attend if you disagree, but that doesn’t mean they should be shunned just like LGBT people used to be.

At least we know their message of tolerance only applies to themselves and not others.

(Not a BYU fan by the way, but it would be nice to see the B12 get back to the good number, and they were honestly the best grab)

        October 27, 2016 at 12:17 pm

And maybe it’s the conference’s culture to not take so kindly to the magic plates, OH WELL. Cincy and Houston are better grabs as a whole, but I would’ve gone Cincy/Memphis for the markets and dollars.

“Minnesota, disappointed they cannot add Akron to fulfill their P5 commits, begrudgingly signs deal with BYU.”

But when Miss. State schedules (and loses to) BYU it is considered a god OOC game. SEC record vs. P5 thus far is 5-6. Big10 is 8-5.

        October 27, 2016 at 7:47 pm

Shep, Try to stir the pot all you can, but nothing wrong here with Minnesota and BYU getting together. Minnesota only plays three OOC games and have Oregon State, BYU, and Colorado all in the near future. Not always the strongest schedules in the coming years for Minnesota, but it’s nothing like the continuous weak scheduling of many of the SEC programs. Keep stirring.

      • Joe
        October 28, 2016 at 11:53 am

The SEC doesn’t have ‘weak scheduling.’ They play just as tough a nonconference schedule as anyone else as well as the most difficult conference schedule.

“…would’ve gone Memphis for the markets and dollars.” Hahahahahahaha. Idiot.

Trust me, bro…there’s a reason the Big 12 chopped Memphis off the list quick. Try to keep up mang.

Minnesota to host Georgia Southern in 2019

    By Kevin Kelley -

      October 19, 2016 at 3:27 pm

Minnesota Non Conference schedule is complete for 2019. Aren’t Gophers required to schedule a power 5 non conference team in Big ten? Can we expect them to move of buyout a game?

      • Kevin Kelley
        October 19, 2016 at 3:31 pm

Who knows, their official release says their schedule is “complete.” Maybe the B1G will take the game at Fresno State as an exception. They are also not supposed to play FCS teams, but South Dakota State was already scheduled.

      October 19, 2016 at 3:39 pm

Thank you Kevin. We will see I guess. I know we also don’t have a Power 5 team scheduled in 2018. All 3 of those games were booked before the schedule requirements.

    3. Josh
      October 19, 2016 at 5:00 pm

Why do teams continue to schedule Georgia Southern? That is a team that P5 teams should never schedule. You’re asking for a loss if not at least cracked knees on Sunday.

      October 20, 2016 at 3:03 am

The following B1G programs do not have an OOC game scheduled against a P5 program in 2019.
      Minnesota @Fresno St
      Wisconsin @USF
      Indiana Conn
      Illinois @Conn

      October 20, 2016 at 9:26 am

Thank you Cory. I know the Big Ten counts UConn and Cincinnati as a P5 even though they are not. Kind of silly. I have no clue about Wisconsin. It looks as though they filled their schedule after the mandate just like the Gophers did.. Maybe is more of something the B1G wants teams to do but not a requirement? I don’t know…

      October 20, 2016 at 2:06 pm

      Star Tribune got the answer:

As far as the scheduling of Fresno State – this is from Joe C in the Strib:

The Big Ten has mandated that members schedule one Power Five nonconference foe per season. Oregon State checks that box for the Gophers in 2017. And the Big Ten has made an exception for independents such as BYU and Notre Dame and certain members of the American Athletic Conference and Mountain West, including Fresno State.

“Otherwise we wouldn’t have done that,” Claeys said. “[The Big Ten] has to approve it.”

So, that explains why Fresno State is on the schedule instead of a “Power 5” team.

Did Fresno State already play a game at BYU? I’m only asking because I see that BYU is playing at Fresno State in 2017, but I don’t recall Fresno State playing in Provo in recent memory.

I’m surprised Fresno isn’t getting a home game against UCLA. For UCLA, their fans could travel to a road game against a quality opponent. Plus, Fresno has a history of hosting big-name teams.

Look at that 2017 OOC schedule. Yes, one FCS, but @ ‘Bama, @ Washington, then home for BYU. That is scheduling up. Nice schedule Fresno.

Fresno could be the first team ever to beat Incarnate Word in Alabama in back to back weeks. They probably won’t; but they could..

Would be interesting to see how many West LA types would travel to Fresno for a game. Those that did probably wouldn’t admit it to their friends!

I think it’d be nice for Fresno State fans to have an opportunity to see their team play in a venue like the Rose Bowl. And for the players to have an opportunity to play on such a storied field. It is a really nice stadium with an awesome history.

        February 12, 2016 at 3:10 pm

I went down to watch Fresno State play UCLA back in ’08 at the Rose Bowl. Fresno beat them and there was a nasty heat wave that day. People were passing out from the heat. So the Bulldogs have played there.

    8. Dave
      October 15, 2015 at 11:16 pm

That is so true because playing in that dumpy cement box they call a stadium is no great thrill. The rose bowl is second to none.

Will there be a travel package available for the Alabama game?

      June 16, 2015 at 3:15 pm

I thought Minnesota was a middle of the road Big Ten team and here they schedule (or confirm) New Mexico State to their home schedule for both 2018 and 2020. Do the Gophers have something better to offer their season ticket holders in those two years in their non-conference play then New Mexico State and Miami Ohio? No offense (if that’s possible), but New Mexico State has only one winning season (7-5 in ’02) in the last 13 seasons played (40-117, .255 in those 13 years). I think Minnesota can see (or hope, knowing they’ve lost before to NMS) these to be wins. With the Gophers still needing 1 non-conference game for each of those two seasons and still having no P5 games on their NC docket, who are they working with to fill those gaps? With what the B1G is trying to implement across the conference I don’t think this helps the cause.

      • Kevin Kelley
        June 16, 2015 at 3:34 pm

Since the Big Ten wants their members to stop scheduling FCS teams, this is what fans will see.

        June 16, 2015 at 7:41 pm

Minnesota is no longer allowed to schedule NDSU. Kind of ironic as the Bison are a better team.

      • Billy
        June 16, 2015 at 9:32 pm

Bill. agree with you, it’s is kind of ironic as the Bisons at this time are probable better than at least half of the Power Five Schools. My thoughts are; what is Minnesota going to do when there are no Power Five Schools left to schedule, use an excuse like others and say there weren’t any to schedule with? Poor Planning equals Poor Results.
