Minnesota to host Georgia Southern in 2019

Minnesota Non Conference schedule is complete for 2019. Aren’t Gophers required to schedule a power 5 non conference team in Big ten? Can we expect them to move of buyout a game?

        October 19, 2016 at 3:31 pm

Who knows, their official release says their schedule is “complete.” Maybe the B1G will take the game at Fresno State as an exception. They are also not supposed to play FCS teams, but South Dakota State was already scheduled.

Thank you Kevin. We will see I guess. I know we also don’t have a Power 5 team scheduled in 2018. All 3 of those games were booked before the schedule requirements.

Why do teams continue to schedule Georgia Southern? That is a team that P5 teams should never schedule. You’re asking for a loss if not at least cracked knees on Sunday.

The following B1G programs do not have an OOC game scheduled against a P5 program in 2019.
      Minnesota @Fresno St
      Wisconsin @USF
      Indiana Conn
      Illinois @Conn

Thank you Cory. I know the Big Ten counts UConn and Cincinnati as a P5 even though they are not. Kind of silly. I have no clue about Wisconsin. It looks as though they filled their schedule after the mandate just like the Gophers did.. Maybe is more of something the B1G wants teams to do but not a requirement? I don’t know…

      Star Tribune got the answer:

As far as the scheduling of Fresno State – this is from Joe C in the Strib:

The Big Ten has mandated that members schedule one Power Five nonconference foe per season. Oregon State checks that box for the Gophers in 2017. And the Big Ten has made an exception for independents such as BYU and Notre Dame and certain members of the American Athletic Conference and Mountain West, including Fresno State.

“Otherwise we wouldn’t have done that,” Claeys said. “[The Big Ten] has to approve it.”

So, that explains why Fresno State is on the schedule instead of a “Power 5” team.

Did Fresno State already play a game at BYU? I’m only asking because I see that BYU is playing at Fresno State in 2017, but I don’t recall Fresno State playing in Provo in recent memory.

I’m surprised Fresno isn’t getting a home game against UCLA. For UCLA, their fans could travel to a road game against a quality opponent. Plus, Fresno has a history of hosting big-name teams.

Look at that 2017 OOC schedule. Yes, one FCS, but @ ‘Bama, @ Washington, then home for BYU. That is scheduling up. Nice schedule Fresno.

Fresno could be the first team ever to beat Incarnate Word in Alabama in back to back weeks. They probably won’t; but they could..

Would be interesting to see how many West LA types would travel to Fresno for a game. Those that did probably wouldn’t admit it to their friends!

I think it’d be nice for Fresno State fans to have an opportunity to see their team play in a venue like the Rose Bowl. And for the players to have an opportunity to play on such a storied field. It is a really nice stadium with an awesome history.

I went down to watch Fresno State play UCLA back in ’08 at the Rose Bowl. Fresno beat them and there was a nasty heat wave that day. People were passing out from the heat. So the Bulldogs have played there.

That is so true because playing in that dumpy cement box they call a stadium is no great thrill. The rose bowl is second to none.

Will there be a travel package available for the Alabama game?

I thought Minnesota was a middle of the road Big Ten team and here they schedule (or confirm) New Mexico State to their home schedule for both 2018 and 2020. Do the Gophers have something better to offer their season ticket holders in those two years in their non-conference play then New Mexico State and Miami Ohio? No offense (if that’s possible), but New Mexico State has only one winning season (7-5 in ’02) in the last 13 seasons played (40-117, .255 in those 13 years). I think Minnesota can see (or hope, knowing they’ve lost before to NMS) these to be wins. With the Gophers still needing 1 non-conference game for each of those two seasons and still having no P5 games on their NC docket, who are they working with to fill those gaps? With what the B1G is trying to implement across the conference I don’t think this helps the cause.

Since the Big Ten wants their members to stop scheduling FCS teams, this is what fans will see.

Minnesota is no longer allowed to schedule NDSU. Kind of ironic as the Bison are a better team.

        June 16, 2015 at 9:32 pm

Bill. agree with you, it’s is kind of ironic as the Bisons at this time are probable better than at least half of the Power Five Schools. My thoughts are; what is Minnesota going to do when there are no Power Five Schools left to schedule, use an excuse like others and say there weren’t any to schedule with? Poor Planning equals Poor Results.

Minnesota to Host Super Bowl LII in 2018

I hope ATL will get to host a Super Bowl in its new stadium

The NFL likes to reward teams who build new stadiums with hosting a Super Bowl so I am pretty sure that Atlanta’s turn will come.

As a Vikings fan, I am very happy that Minnesota will host Super Bowl LII. It hasn’t fully sunk in yet but over the next four years it definitely will!

What about Seattle as host? It is the most gorgeous setting in football and warmer than New York City.

I can see the 12th man now surrounding the stadium screaming their lungs out when Seattle play in it’s 6th Super bowl in a row!!

You can say what you want about the new stadium craze, but I think Minnesota’s have been justified (both Target Field and the new Vikings dome). The Metrodome was a bust and it took the roof caving in to get a new stadium plan going. The new Vikings stadium looks a classy venue without being too exorbitant, while Target Field is a classic baseball venue. Sports fans in the Twin Cities have it pretty good right now.

I was fortunate to see both the Twins and the Vikings play at the old Metropolitan Stadium. I also saw both teams play in the dome. Hooray for Target Field but I’m sorry they put the Vikes in another enclosed venue because like Lambeau in Green Bay, outdoors in December in Minnesota was always a benefit. The Vikings haven’t won once since they moved to the Dome and I watched the last time they won the NFC Championship against the LA Rams at minus 16 degrees outdoors in 1976. Not all Minnesota fans are wusses like me. (I moved to the Sun Belt ten years ago.)

Even though it’s “neutral” I consider LSU-Wisconsin to be a home-and-home and this is the LSU leg. A great one, no doubt. But it would count as an SEC game in my book. If the Green Bay game is in primetime and the two programs haven’t fallen apart by then, that will make the B1G list for sure.

That should be a good game. I don’t think that is one of the prime time games though, I’m thinking noon start at the big house.

And Yes. Well aware of the ‘Primetime’ tag of the article. But c’mon man….really? Week 2 of a CFB year and you think there is any chance in holy horse nuts that MSU/OU isn’t a night game??? Its ridiculous to leave it off…OSU/MSU that was announced as Primetime being excluded for Nov totally understandable..But a non-conference top 10 game…no chance

The rating system sucks! Why doesn’t Ohio State play more games with TOP 25 teams. What? Two or three a year for a football factory!!?!? Pretty soft schedule and STILL no Championships lately……daaaa!!
