Could this be clearing the way for Arizona-MiamiFL home-and-home in 2017-18?
Maybe you are on to something. For Miami to return to respectability one of the things they need to do is beef up the OOC scheduling. Games with a team like Arizona in 2017-2018 would get Miami up to 2 OOC games with P5 teams, meaning a RS schedule of at least 10 games with P5 teams.

This is a cute article, I would’ve kept out A&M vs UTSA since this is their 1st ever meeting.
If you watched the 2014 Georgia Southern @ Georgia Tech game or better yet, if you attended the game, then you would know the ACC referees took the game out of the players hands with a terrible reversal of an ON THE FIELD call (requires indisputable evidence…it’s still being disputed). Georgia Southern was the better team that day and still has the more dynamic roster. Thank you Paul Johnson and the Tech AD for not being scared (UGAg) and rescheduling the Eagles…GS won’t leave it in question this go around. It would be great for the state if GS and Tech continued to schedule a game (maybe a H&H once Paulson Stadium is expanded to 30k) every other year. Athletically, as of late, the two schools are closer to peers than big brother-little brother.
Georgia has played Georgia Southern six times since 1992, Georgia Tech only once. I don’t think Georgia is scared of GS.
Interesting that 5 of those 6 times were when Georgia Southern had 63 scholarships. The 6th game was a carry over from GS’s FCS days and Georgia elected to move the game from 2016 to 2015 probably because they didn’t want an additional year of FBS recruiting for GS. Georgia was gifted that win last year and every dawg fan knows it. For both parties, it is understood that Georgia no longer wants any part in scheduling GS and frankly that’s fine by me.
Don’t worry Kevin Kelly, that’s just GS non-sense talk. They told GSU that they’d never beat GS – but in the just the second meeting (last year) GSU gave them their worst defeat in the history of Paulson High School County Stadium, The glory days of GS are behind them. The newsflash to GS is that they are the #4 team in the state of Georgia and they think that they are #1.
Georgia Tech got up big in that game and then let up and allowed Georgia Southern back in, the Eagles were far from the better team that day.
Georgia Southern’s coach was on his way out and focused on a million dollar salary…way to go. How’d that bowl game work out for the mighty Panthers? Let’s compare some numbers for a minute…17-53 (129th in FBS) vs. 375-200-10 (14th in FBS)…0 D1 National Championships vs. 6 D1 National Championships (most all-time)…0 D1 Conference Titles vs. 11 D1 Conference Titles. WHEW! I can certainly understand why a Panther fan (those exist?) would cling like hell to that win against Georgia Southern! Run along now, let us men get back to it.
GS has never beat UGA – GS has never beat GT – GS is 50/50 against GSU.
So your excuse is that GS got pounded at home by GSU cause your coach was dreaming about a real job? Really? That’s all it took for the mighty Beagles to lose at home? A coach’s daydream? All that tripe that GS spews about GSU and you got pounded in just the second effing year by a five year old football team? Fact is that Richt got fired because he almost lost to GS so that should tell you about how little respect there is for the GS product. So maybe GS needs to realize that they may start to fall behind KSU or Mercer. You guys have such an incredible false sense of entitlement from all those Pee-Wee league trophies. Probably ought to go on back to FCS Pee-Wee league! How about that Capt GAyTAy?
The Real GSU has played UGA and GT once with equal scholarships. Do you understand that having 22 less scholarships is a disadvantage? Once the playing field was made even, the Real GSU lost by a combined 10 points in their first outings with 85 scholarships. Again, I appreciate GT rescheduling the Real GSU unlike UGAg (I bet you’re a UGAg fan before a GAy St fan). Do you understand that when a head coach does not prep their team for a game that the team is unprepared? Big concepts here. Do you have any facts or just opinions? Richt was on the hot seat at the start of that season and the season before that…try to keep up. The fact that you recognize KSU and Mercer says a lot about where you view GAy St. Pee-Wee trophies…you’re talking about Division 1 National Championships. Do you understand that prior to the College Football Playoff, the FCS Playoff was the highest form of a college football playoff in existence? Oh but computers picking two teams worked out every time. The Real GSU should go back to FCS? You mean the Real GSU with the 18-7 FBS record (.720)? How about GAy St with the 7-30 FBS record (.189). This is too easy man, c’mon. (A) Why would GAy St field a football team and (B) why would ANYONE be a fan???? LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!!!
Southern has never beaten Georgia and never will.
The “REAL” GSU just beat the GaSo clown big talkers AGAIN! GAyTAy!!!
So GaSo now has a LOSING record against GSU along with
never beating UGA and GT! So just go STFU !!!!!!!!!!
what about the Brigham Young-Utah State game or the Notre Dame-Navy game?
Neither BYU nor USU are a Power 5. And Notre Dame and Navy aren’t in the same state.
Matt probably meant to say the BYU-Utah game. Utah is a P5, but BYU is not. The summary would read something like this:
When: Saturday, Sept. 10, 5:30pm MT
Where: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, UT
All-Time Series Leader: Utah, 58-34-4 (62.5%)
Last-Five: Utah, 5-0 (100%)
Utah has dominated its little brother, BYU, over the last 13 meetings (10-3, 77%). And they will certainly do so again this fall.
how would BYU qualify as a “Big” brother?
Bill, Utah would be the big brother
Someone asked that on Twitter, FBSchedules replied “BYU generally considered P5 so not included.”
BYU fits the P5 requirement for scheduling for most if not all conferences. The SEC looks at BYU as a P5…last time I checked the SEC is the premier program in College Football.
good article ….but i would say Georgia Southern has a much better chance of beating Georgia Tech than many of the games you have ranked as more likely. I don’t think very many people would be surprised is Georgia Southern wins that game.
Utah had to be invited to a conference to be considered P5. BYU did it on their own.
BYU is considered by some to be a P5 “for scheduling purposes.” But we’re not actually a P5, since we don’t belong to a P5 conference. That’s why it’s so important for us to get into the Big XII…the fate and viability of our football program rests on it. If we don’t get in and become an actual P5, our future looks no better than that of New Mexico State.
By that thinking, Toledo would also be considered a Power 5 Power Team, since it can beat 1/2 or more of teams from Power 5 Conferences…
Little brother = going on every web site possible to talk about how Utah should really be a big brother
I think ECU is NC State’s big brother when it comes to football.
ECU has not only won 3 out of 5, but 9 out of the last 15.
Go Pirates! Argh!
What about Penn State vs Pitt this year?
Pitt is P5.
PSU is B1G/Power 5 also
I don’t think many Ohio State fans see any MAC schools as “little brother.” The only school that would make sense to have that designation would be U of Cincinnati.
Toledo, Ohio and BGSU, Ohio are both vastly better than Cincinnati, Ohio !!! As is Ohio Bobcats
Where is Alabama-Auburn? Auburn is the ultimate “Little Brother” who lives to beat Big Brother, Alabama. Alabama lives to win national championships; Auburn lives to beat Alabama.
When they say little brother, I think they actually mean LITTLE BROTHER! Auburn is not a little brother to Bama, same conference, same league, Auburn has done their fair share of butt whooping on Bama in the past. If that was the case then the article would have Michigan vs Michigan St.
Oh goodness, here we go, another SEC team opens up with a Cupcake Game.
Ok lets hear you numb nuts go on about the easy schedule Fl plays.
lol…..no, they will complain about how Florida never leaves the state meanwhile they play in Texas next year.
Well in 2017 and 2019 Florida will be doing something sort of rare for an SEC team. That would be playing 2 OOC games with P5 teams. Good for Florida.
FWIW, the Gators haven’t played an OOC regular season games outside the state of Florida in 25 seasons. In 1991, they played Syracuse in NY, lost, and it cost them an undefeated regular season, a likely shot at a national championship, and it absolutely demonstrates what kind of advantage it is to never have to travel far for away games. Good for them for never having to leave their state for OOC games, and I get that they have had a tough OOC opponent in Florida for all 25 of those years. But anyone pretending that it’s not an advantage (to never have to leave the state except for SEC games) is joking themselves. Without looking it up, that has to be the longest streak in the country… It’s good to see them play Michigan in Texas, but even with that game, it won’t be a “road game”…so they will still have the longest streak in the country in not playing a true OOC road game…
Congras Orlando! Yet another great neutral site game, they should play this game every year & meet halfway like the the UGA vs UF in Jacksonville.
I’m glad to see them renew the rivalry. It is good for college football when they play. I would like to see them play every year, like they used to do.
when was the last time UF played a non-conference game outside the state of Florida, during the Nixon administration?
Greg, it was actually during Old man Bush’s administration. September 21st, 1991. Yes, 25 years ago.
Jack Striker from the Georgia Post
It is not that Florida does not leave Florida for it’s OOC schedule, (Not Every BlueBlood Will be Like Ohio State, Oklahoma or Texas and play Home and Home’s). My complaint is that they repeatedly schedule the dregs of the FBS AND and FBS in one season.
2011 – Florida ATL., UAB, Furman
2014 – Idaho, Eastern Michigan, Eastern Kentucky
Florida could do a 2-1 with USF and/or UCF (and those schools would be willing to have have one huge sell-out) each year to go along with their FSU game at the least.
Since the ACC and the SEC refuse to go to 9 game conference schedules, Miami and Florida should renew their series that ended after the 87 season. Home and Home, like it used to be. If they want to play in Orlando every year, that is okay also.
I think Florid and FSU would be glad to schedule UCF, if UCF would agree to play in Citrus Bowl when they are the home team. UCF has a nice stadium which holds only 45,000. Both FSU and Florida can help UCF fill up the citrus bowl now and than.
Of course UCF and USF can attract good P5 programs to come play home and home series with the respective programs, as teams want to show the flag in Florida for recruiting.UCF has shown they can get series with P5 teams which may never be willing to schedule Florida FSU or Miami such as Texas and Stanford.
Why do so many folks think that the ACC should go to 9 conference games? They already play ND five times each year and Clem, FSU, GT, and Louisville all play annual games against decent SEC opponents and several schools play good teams early in the season in the OOC schedule. There are reasons why that kind of schedule makes sense for the Pac 12 (geography makes it hard to get OOC opponents) and Big 12 (same thing, plus it allows for round robin scheduling). The B1G also has a reason (BTN content) to go to 9 conference games, but there is very little driver for the ACC as long as its members continue these games with the SEC and Notre Dame. FWIW, the ACC played more (conference plus OOC) games against P5 opponents (133) than any other league in 2015. More than the Big ten (127) who also played an 8 game league schedule in 2015.
The average number of games against P5 opponents for all 65 P5 schools was 9.37. That seems like the average number for FSU and Florida over the past decade. Not sure what the problem is here.
Any rumors of who florida plan on scheduling next?
There was a time when the Hurricanes would play anyone anywhere….I am not sure this is what they had in mind.
gonna be more embarrissing after we beat you
The attendance @ this game beat any other Miami home game!
True, Matt……count on a SRO crowd of 31,000 at Kidd-Brewer..
I like this match-up. It may not be the most appealing match-up ever, but it will be a really good game. This is a good sign for for App State. Maybe not so good for Miami with the scheduling, but this is a win-win for both teams.
Miami makes more money doing a home and home with a Sun Belt opponent? Sad….
Sad? No, sad will be the state of the hurricane fans when App State lays the smack down on the U….
More embarrassing than the Clemson game at home this year??????????
This is called “Miami AD Blake James is building goodwill in areas around the country which have mostly forgotten about U football.”
For recruiting purposes, playing in North Carolina, Arkansas, and Ohio isn’t a bad move at all. NC high school football is hugely competitive. Why yield all these recruits to UNC, NCSU, WFU, Duke and Clemson? Arkansas is fertile ground, too. There are only two Div I colleges to compete against, UAF and ASU. Ohio is always good call–Miami used to attract a lot of ballers from the Midwest and doesn’t much anymore.. .and playing Toledo as opposed to tOSU means a likelier win.
I thought bake James was smart, is he? Schedule a Baylor, alabama,Michigan wvu can beat those teams grow a pair hire Davis show the world who has the greatest football program
Miami will probably have a lot of fans at this game. It is a little known secret that most rich south Florida Floridians have summer homes in the North Carolina mountains.
I just wish that home and home with Southern Miss would happen. Florida raider Louisville has increased their recruiting in Mississippi the last few years so it would make since for Miami to do the same. At least it makes more since than playing Arkansas State in Jonesboro. Mississippi State won’t even do that!
the U better get ready for app state… you think just because there a power five school they will just blow by app, yea tell that to Michigan fans. #ftc
Looks just like an SEC West Schedule. 1 Good team, 3 cupcakes. Guaranteed 3-1 or 4-0 start. Just need a 3-5 or 2-6 Conference record to make it to a bowl game. Lol.
Haven’t the Miami fans suffered enough/ With all seriousness, this makes no sense unless they are doing a 3 for 1 with Appalachian St.
#Miami would be lucky to play at App. State. In fact, the college gameday experience and atmosphere at Miami games pales in comparison to #Appalachian home games. Worse yet, I doubt the #hurricanes leave with a win. #welcometotherock
homer? Shep? As if the thousands of Miami fans supporting a team that hasn’t done anything in the past 15 years dropping loads of “they aren’t good enough to lick the dirt off our cleats” attitude aren’t homers? Give me a break. The U has boatloads of history and nobody can take that away, but Miami needed a game for 9/17/2016, App had UMass in that slot, who bought the game out to play South Carolina, filled the spot with and FCS, and were looking to upgrade. App had the opportunity and availability to host Miami and all the bargaining chips: “come to Boone first or find yourself another road opponent on 10 months’ notice.”
The Hurricanes would be right at home….felons playing in a stadium named after a felon.
Stfu Loser. You’re the type to bring up a teams bad past but ignore their championships with “that’s just history from 20+ years ago” and I’d bet that you’re a gator fan too or of another program who routinely sends players to jail. So sit your ass down clown
Who on Miami’s current roster are you referring to when you refer to them as felons? Careful, your uneducated bias is showing or is that stupidity?
This would be no different than a trip to Duke or Wake except for a better game day atmosphere in Boone. Cleaner air and better football.
Duke ow Wake Forest would be a conference game for Miami. Visiting a team in the Sun Belt conference that has only been playing in D 1-A for a few years is completely different.
Miami opened the 2003 season at La. Tech seven months after playing in the National Title Game. Just saying.
Economics of college football are much different 13 years later. Even Purdue or Wake Forest doesn’t play a G5 team without at least a return game, and the bigger name P5 teams should get at ;least a 2-1. Miami may be in a rough patch butb they are still a better draw than half the P5 teams.
Check this out:
Current Record as of 18 Nov 15
Middle Tennessee State 5 – 5 (Con. USA)
University of Louisiana Monroe 1 – 9 (Sun Belt)
Charleston Southern 9 – 1 (Big South)
Strength of schedule considered against these powerhouses has one time in the top 4 of the playoffs. So I don’t want to hear anything about cupcakes.
Come on… Power 5 teams are going to gravitate to the lower level FBS teams so there’s no discussion of strength of schedule. They are going to play MAC, Sun Belt or American Athletic teams. Miami has ND for the next 2 years at least. They play FSU, VT, UNC and yeah Duke this year… That’s not a bad schedule.. plus they have one more team to pick up for the opener.
App state is not to be taken lightly! this coming from a die hard canes fan!
