This is a cute article, I would’ve kept out A&M vs UTSA since this is their 1st ever meeting.
If you watched the 2014 Georgia Southern @ Georgia Tech game or better yet, if you attended the game, then you would know the ACC referees took the game out of the players hands with a terrible reversal of an ON THE FIELD call (requires indisputable evidence…it’s still being disputed). Georgia Southern was the better team that day and still has the more dynamic roster. Thank you Paul Johnson and the Tech AD for not being scared (UGAg) and rescheduling the Eagles…GS won’t leave it in question this go around. It would be great for the state if GS and Tech continued to schedule a game (maybe a H&H once Paulson Stadium is expanded to 30k) every other year. Athletically, as of late, the two schools are closer to peers than big brother-little brother.
Georgia has played Georgia Southern six times since 1992, Georgia Tech only once. I don’t think Georgia is scared of GS.
Interesting that 5 of those 6 times were when Georgia Southern had 63 scholarships. The 6th game was a carry over from GS’s FCS days and Georgia elected to move the game from 2016 to 2015 probably because they didn’t want an additional year of FBS recruiting for GS. Georgia was gifted that win last year and every dawg fan knows it. For both parties, it is understood that Georgia no longer wants any part in scheduling GS and frankly that’s fine by me.
Don’t worry Kevin Kelly, that’s just GS non-sense talk. They told GSU that they’d never beat GS – but in the just the second meeting (last year) GSU gave them their worst defeat in the history of Paulson High School County Stadium, The glory days of GS are behind them. The newsflash to GS is that they are the #4 team in the state of Georgia and they think that they are #1.
Georgia Tech got up big in that game and then let up and allowed Georgia Southern back in, the Eagles were far from the better team that day.
Georgia Southern’s coach was on his way out and focused on a million dollar salary…way to go. How’d that bowl game work out for the mighty Panthers? Let’s compare some numbers for a minute…17-53 (129th in FBS) vs. 375-200-10 (14th in FBS)…0 D1 National Championships vs. 6 D1 National Championships (most all-time)…0 D1 Conference Titles vs. 11 D1 Conference Titles. WHEW! I can certainly understand why a Panther fan (those exist?) would cling like hell to that win against Georgia Southern! Run along now, let us men get back to it.
GS has never beat UGA – GS has never beat GT – GS is 50/50 against GSU.
So your excuse is that GS got pounded at home by GSU cause your coach was dreaming about a real job? Really? That’s all it took for the mighty Beagles to lose at home? A coach’s daydream? All that tripe that GS spews about GSU and you got pounded in just the second effing year by a five year old football team? Fact is that Richt got fired because he almost lost to GS so that should tell you about how little respect there is for the GS product. So maybe GS needs to realize that they may start to fall behind KSU or Mercer. You guys have such an incredible false sense of entitlement from all those Pee-Wee league trophies. Probably ought to go on back to FCS Pee-Wee league! How about that Capt GAyTAy?
The Real GSU has played UGA and GT once with equal scholarships. Do you understand that having 22 less scholarships is a disadvantage? Once the playing field was made even, the Real GSU lost by a combined 10 points in their first outings with 85 scholarships. Again, I appreciate GT rescheduling the Real GSU unlike UGAg (I bet you’re a UGAg fan before a GAy St fan). Do you understand that when a head coach does not prep their team for a game that the team is unprepared? Big concepts here. Do you have any facts or just opinions? Richt was on the hot seat at the start of that season and the season before that…try to keep up. The fact that you recognize KSU and Mercer says a lot about where you view GAy St. Pee-Wee trophies…you’re talking about Division 1 National Championships. Do you understand that prior to the College Football Playoff, the FCS Playoff was the highest form of a college football playoff in existence? Oh but computers picking two teams worked out every time. The Real GSU should go back to FCS? You mean the Real GSU with the 18-7 FBS record (.720)? How about GAy St with the 7-30 FBS record (.189). This is too easy man, c’mon. (A) Why would GAy St field a football team and (B) why would ANYONE be a fan???? LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!!!
Southern has never beaten Georgia and never will.
The “REAL” GSU just beat the GaSo clown big talkers AGAIN! GAyTAy!!!
So GaSo now has a LOSING record against GSU along with
never beating UGA and GT! So just go STFU !!!!!!!!!!
what about the Brigham Young-Utah State game or the Notre Dame-Navy game?
Neither BYU nor USU are a Power 5. And Notre Dame and Navy aren’t in the same state.
Matt probably meant to say the BYU-Utah game. Utah is a P5, but BYU is not. The summary would read something like this:
When: Saturday, Sept. 10, 5:30pm MT
Where: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, UT
All-Time Series Leader: Utah, 58-34-4 (62.5%)
Last-Five: Utah, 5-0 (100%)
Utah has dominated its little brother, BYU, over the last 13 meetings (10-3, 77%). And they will certainly do so again this fall.
how would BYU qualify as a “Big” brother?
Bill, Utah would be the big brother
Someone asked that on Twitter, FBSchedules replied “BYU generally considered P5 so not included.”
BYU fits the P5 requirement for scheduling for most if not all conferences. The SEC looks at BYU as a P5…last time I checked the SEC is the premier program in College Football.
good article ….but i would say Georgia Southern has a much better chance of beating Georgia Tech than many of the games you have ranked as more likely. I don’t think very many people would be surprised is Georgia Southern wins that game.
Utah had to be invited to a conference to be considered P5. BYU did it on their own.
BYU is considered by some to be a P5 “for scheduling purposes.” But we’re not actually a P5, since we don’t belong to a P5 conference. That’s why it’s so important for us to get into the Big XII…the fate and viability of our football program rests on it. If we don’t get in and become an actual P5, our future looks no better than that of New Mexico State.
By that thinking, Toledo would also be considered a Power 5 Power Team, since it can beat 1/2 or more of teams from Power 5 Conferences…
Little brother = going on every web site possible to talk about how Utah should really be a big brother
I think ECU is NC State’s big brother when it comes to football.
ECU has not only won 3 out of 5, but 9 out of the last 15.
Go Pirates! Argh!
What about Penn State vs Pitt this year?
Pitt is P5.
PSU is B1G/Power 5 also
I don’t think many Ohio State fans see any MAC schools as “little brother.” The only school that would make sense to have that designation would be U of Cincinnati.
Toledo, Ohio and BGSU, Ohio are both vastly better than Cincinnati, Ohio !!! As is Ohio Bobcats
Where is Alabama-Auburn? Auburn is the ultimate “Little Brother” who lives to beat Big Brother, Alabama. Alabama lives to win national championships; Auburn lives to beat Alabama.
When they say little brother, I think they actually mean LITTLE BROTHER! Auburn is not a little brother to Bama, same conference, same league, Auburn has done their fair share of butt whooping on Bama in the past. If that was the case then the article would have Michigan vs Michigan St.

Glad to see this kind or scheduling by the Wolfpack! Improves the schedule. Shame it isn’t until 2018 – 22028! Would like to see this from 2017!
The UConn games could be affected by potential ACC expansion. If they and Cincinnati are added to the ACC soon, not sure if NCSU and UConn keep the non-conference series though they would be in separate football divisions.
This neutral site game should draw in fans easily being in Charlotte.
Good, this allows Troy to have UAB visit in 2017, when the UAB program resumes.
NC State’s schedule in 2017 is worlds better than this year.
This seasons game had an attendance of 51,000. Just 70% of BOA Stadium’s capacity.
Attendance was at that level due to outrageous ticket prices, not fan interest.
Not to mention the game was at 5:30 or so…
this is it this our seasons
perfect solutions with this one
Look Like it will be for one more
Well we will see if the playoff committee really values SOS. The ACC should be embarrassed loading up on a FCS games coupled with having 8 game conf schedule with 14 teams. * game conf schedule is asinine in a 6-1-1 format you play 6 teams in your conf twice every 12 years. They will be cream puff state more times then they play a supposed conf member, you shoud want to play more to get your top teams playing more cross division games and to produce compelling match ups for the fans. All P5 conferences should ban playing FCS schools or be like USC, UCLA. ND who have never played a FCS school. There are enough mid majors to play without playing schools have 20 less scholarships. All conferences shouls go to 9 game conf, that;s you ACC and SEC especially since you have 14 teams. They should also play minimum 1 P5 opponent and the rest can be mid majors.
The 9 game conference schedule does not fit well. I would rather see all conferences at 8 conference games + 3 out of conference power 5 games (on a rotating basis where you play all the teams) + 1 group of five game, also on a rotating basis. I too do not like the fcs games. In the 1920-1940’s these schools maybe could compete. They cant now and its not fair to the kids from those schools to have to get their brains beat in for money. The power 5 can set up a fund or use a spring scrimmage game. My school would sell 80,000 tickets to see a spring scrimmage game. Charge 5-10 bucks a head and there is their yearly payout. The fans want to see the major teams play and not Alabama vs podunk state.
I would also like to see the power 5 conference’s all go to 16 teams, take in the next best 15 programs and each have a conference championship game. The 8 team playoff model is the best, 5 conference champs + 3 wild cards.
If they go to 16 teams per conference then they definitely should go with the 9 conference games but I like the 8 team playoff scheme.
8 games with 14 teams is asinine. The ACC and SEC have it and it means you play 6 teams in your conference twice over 12 years. They will all play some FCS school more in 12 years than they play 6 of their conf members. The best idea with 14 teams is 6-3 format, no permanent cross overs.
I wouldn’t mind getting rid of divisions, having a 9 game schedule with 5 permanent rivals, and 4 rotating teams filling the schedule. This way you’d have a home-and-home with each team in the conference every four years.
Have the conference championship game with the two best teams.
I feel the ACC and SEC could schedule an FCS opponent every other year to help out those programs financially but it’s every year. Since they’re staying with the 6-1-1 format they should play at least two P5 programs each year and one mid-major, if they (the schools that notoriously schedule FCS opponents) were to do what i proposed then years where they don’t have a FCS school on the schedule they could put another mid-major or man up and put an additional P5 but that’s not going to happen. The SEC would never schedule three in one year because “the SEC is the toughest conference and that would hurt them overall….” boohoo, listen, if you’re really the toughest conference what do you have to worry about? I’ll tell you what, they’re worried that they will get exposed like Alabama did in the Sugar Bowl where the entire conference struggles in OOC play and all the SEC junkies realize the SEC may not be as strong as they were made out to be. There is no real measuring stick on the absolute strongest conference but I’d venture to say it’s a draw between the SEC and PAC-12 with the B1G and BIG12 following suit, then the ACC ( at least this would be my estimate for the strength of conferences).
I think the problem with the SEC scheduling four major OOC games would have to do with
injuries week in & week out. Please keep in mind the SEC went 6-3 in bowls games last year. Alabama is 4-1 in bowl games (3-0) National Champion games over the last 5 years, I don’t think Bama was exposed, may not wanted to be there but after the Auburn run back it would be hard to get over. Oklahoma had great talented players & great plays & deserved to win the game.
When I say exposed I in no way mean it shows they’re not a great team or that the conference is weak, I’m saying exposed in the sense that they’re not THE best. A lot of people, especially on ESPN, were stating Alabama was the best team and were arguing that they were still number one in 2013 and Oklahoma wasn’t even near the same caliber of team. I’m not taking anything away from Alabama’s accomplishments, they deserve quite a bit of the hype but come on now, I feel like they and a bunch of other teams (not just in the SEC) NEED to up the bar on OOC scheduling by quite a bit. Injuries is a serious issue in all sports, they’ll unfortunately happen regardless of the counter measures we put up but they still can be avoided to a extent but now with this logic we’re going from risking ourselves to risking others by going against teams that due to the lack of scholarships don’t have the same depth on their roster and any injury can seriously hurt the rest of their season. That’s selfish of these major schools but that’s a whole other discussion. You’re right though, Oklahoma has a lot of talent on that team and were not getting enough credit plus the SEC overall did well in the post season but the focus is on the road to the post season and national title contention. This SEC favoritism takes other programs out of the picture even if they deserve a shot because the view that the SEC is the best but I don’t see the hard evidence and you can’t convince everyone on it simply by looking at the SEC dominance of the BCS era for the BCS was flawed, the playoff system should have been set-in a long time ago.
As far as I can tell, there are only A HANDFUL of programs who don’t play an FCS school:
Michigan has played UMass and App State in recent history. They open with App State, a game scheduled when App State was still an FCS program.
The two LA schools and Notre Dame are the last 3 schools who have *never* played an FCS game. ND never will as long as they’re on NBC, and I find it highly unlikely that the other two ever will either–unlike an Alabama or an OSU, they can’t just sell out the stadium against anybody. And they play in such a fertile recruiting ground that there’s no shortage of FBS teams who would leap at the chance to play there.
Arizona has played Northern Arizona every other year since 2002 and in years they don’t play they have another FCS team on the schedule.
Also I want to see Delaware vs. Michigan, just once, before I die. Just so people’s heads will explode.
Umass and App State are both D1 schools now so no they aren’t playing FCS schools. Horrible D1 schools, but D1 nonetheless.
Delaware has historically been a really good FCS program. I wouldn’t be surprised if they knock off one of those teams.
I think the FCS games should continue. Those teams cover a lot of their athletic budget with the guarantee money from those. Moving to a nine-game conference schedule, then requiring one FCS, one group of 5, and one P5 school would make for a balanced schedule.
Are you nuts? Requiring a FCS game is asinine. It should be 9 game conf, minimum 1 P5 OOC and the rest mid majors. Playing FCS schools is like NY Yankess playing their AAA far team and counting it in the MLB stats. FCS schools have 22 less scholarships per year, less resources, facilities, etc..The games serve no competitive purpose. They should be banned! The B10 is fasing them out when they go to 9 game conf schedule in 2017 as they should be by all conferences. The only programs never to play FCS schools are USC, UCLA, ND
I agree they are usually not competitive, but that guaranteed money goes a long way in helping keep the smaller athletic departments solvent. Plus every once in a while you get a special App State/Michigan moment.
These kinds of game are played in EVERY SINGLE college sport. I wouldn’t REQUIRE an FCS game per se, but mandating that they CAN’T be played is ridiculous. Let schools schedule how they want to schedule. If it gets abused, it will work itself out when it comes to time to be selected for the playoff. I don’t know who gets hurt when the big boys play the FCS games. Folks who complain about it are just grandstanding and/or B1G homers. Literally, NO ONE gets hurt by the big boys playing these teams and it would hurt the FCS guys a lot more than it hurts the big boys honestly.
The FCS games quite honestly are boring for the most part. The nine game schedule does not fit well for the ACC for several reasons. The ACC is perceived to be the weaker conference and more out of conference P5 games are needed in enhance their strength of schedule not a 9th conference game. Do away with the divisions and rotate the schedule, you play every team every other year. Best 2 teams play for conference championship.
I think that the B1G is the “perceived” weaker conference by people with knowledge.
Go ask your Ohio State fans how well things work out with say Clemson not to mention FSU.
The biggest beat down in the history of the “big-house” was put on Michigan by FSU.
Now maybe the B1G can hang with the likes of Pitt or Syracuse or Wake Forest but otherwise things are pretty clear.
Atlanta_Mafia I’m offended by that. Pitt would have a legitimate chance to beat every team in the B1G right now except for Michigan State and Ohio State. Syracuse would be about equal to half the teams in the mighty B1g right now too.
Is this the first evidence Delaware wants to upgrade? They are not that bad a fit for CUSA or AAC. needing an extra team.
Certainly better than UMass on the field
Wishing there was a like button right now, honest to god!
Some schools cant find an FBS opponent who will agree to visit without demanding a home and home. FCS is the only way to get a 6th or 7th home game.
I agree with one of the people that said if schools wanna schedule an FCS Opponent, instead of them playing during the season, play a full scrimmage game. Just like at the end of Spring Camp, Schedule Syracuse vs Maine, Texas A&M vs Texas St, Utah to play Portland St etc etc..
I might suggest those who feel no P5 team should be scheduling any FCS team may also want to go through schedules for other sports. I have the feeling these FCS programs are on just about every sports programs schedules in most other sports.
I read somewhere that Delaware, JMU, & Stony Brook were looking at moving to MAC. Then W&M, Richmond, & Nova would move to Patriot leaving Elon, UNH, Rhody, Albany, & Maine to blow in the wind.
Scheduling and FCS team is actually benefiting the FCS school because they get $$$$ to travel and get a loss in most cases.
Let the ACC go to 16 football teams…4 divisions of 4….Then play everyone in your division, and play everyone in another division (rotates every year). 7 Games so far…Then play 1 team in both of the last 2 divisions based on prior season placement. (If you finished 3rd, you play the 3rd place teams from the year before in the last two divisions…) 9 Conference Games. 3 Non-Conference games…The 2 Division winners with the best conference record play in the championship game…
Who would you add to the ACC?
UConn & Cincy
Even though Iowa St isnt a powerhouse, North Dakota St proved why teams do not schedule FCS teams. But many people forget, many of these FCS teams have FBS players that just couldnt qualify acedemically in most cases.
When your athletic director still thinks that the WAC is a conference, you schedule garbage games.
They need to schedule games against the Southwest Conference to stay relevant in this day and age.
How about a neutral site vs. Penn State?
So the summarize they added 1 game of note Notre Dame which the ACC actually booked for then in the ND/ACC rotation of games. Marshall and Ball State are mediocre mid major, Old Dominion is a transition program and the added 9 FCS games. Why they fee to book FCS programs so far in advance is beyond me, But the fact that they are loading up on these games while many programs are eliminating or reducing these games shows NC State has no desire to be a nationally prominent program.
Ball State actually had a really good year in 2013, not sure where you’re getting that from.
Say what you want about Marshall. We do our speaking on the scoreboard. Yes we were D1AA when you all barely beat us and u was ranked in the top 10. ,the officials have I two
NC State is not a program neutral site sponsors want, they are not a big name that will draw fans in a neutral location nor do they draw a national tv audience. These are what these neutral site sponsors want.
NC State vs Tennessee 8/31/12 in Atlanta?
The attendance was 55K in 75K stadium. my point is made perfectly. It was the lowest attended Chick Fil – A kickoff by over 13K, next lowest was UNC/LSU(68K) all the rest were above 70K
I would be embarrassed if I went to NC State. I’m so happy I came to my senses at the last minute.
Unless you were going to school to play football, you should be embarrassed to make that statement.
That is horrendously bad…and it’s not like their future schedules already had a lot of excitement to them to begin with. Wow. Just atrocious. If I were a ‘Pack fan I’d be thinking about giving up tickets and just watching from my house.
Two things: wasn’t Yow the one that left Maryland in that moon sized crater of debt? And she also still believes the WAC is a conference?
So, we should schedule Oklahoma, Southern Cal, Georgia, and Oregon to make you happy. Then play FSU, Clemson, Louisville, Virgina Tech to make idiots like you believe the schedule is “tough.” Those of you that believe this will be the same folks who sit home on your big wide a$$ and bitch that we don’t win 11 games every year. The goal is a bowl. Do that consistently then add one Power 5 contender each year,
The WAC is a conference, just not one you would be scheduling football games with.
Precisely. Lots of non-football schools in it. Their basketball and baseball lineups are pretty decent.
Sad she says WAC when she clearly means Mountain West Conference. And who says the east is out of touch with the west….
Let’s hear it from the NC State fans , if there are any. They are a completely irrelevant program, have not been to a major bowl game in decades. This litany of cupcake games is a joke and and is an affirmation that NC Stare prefers to remain irrelevant for the foreseeable future. Come on all you wolf pack fans, defend these actions. Your silence is taken as your agreement.
This is your schedule-palooza right here.
NC State really should be better than they are. They can get anybody into school and can recruit out of Georgia and the northern VA/DC area. They’re second choice in the state behind UNC but can only manage to win 7-8 games each year. I just don’t get it.
It appears you dont know much about ACC football or NC. NCSU has beaten UNC I believe 5 of last six years. UNC even cheated and still always remains the Dark Horse every year. Heck their accreditation as a University is now in jeopardy and on probation. NCSU is clearly a step above UNC. Even in basketball NCSU is making in roads beating UNC and advancing further in NCAA and thats again without cheating. UNC has never been a football program. But I do agree that these non conference schedule is a joke. LSU was a good one and so was Tenn. they should schedule Maryland and WVA or USC. Play USC in Charlotte like we did years ago with Russell Wilson. Heck line up UGA and PSU.
9 FCS schools? Is that some kind of joke? Seriously, if they can’t step their scheduling philosophy up, then there is no reason they should be part of a Power 5 conference. Scheduling that many FCS schools, up to ten years into the future, is asinine.
Nine FCS schools over nine years. Oner per year. Every SEC school is playing an FCS school in 2014. Almost all power 5 conference schools play one FCS team each year. Where’s the joke?
Clearly they want no part of the Power 5. This seems to be a move to ensure these games are grandfathered should these stiffs ban further scheduling of FCS opponents.
Wow! Their 2015 non-conference schedule is an absolute joke. People are right, they don’t care about growing their football program.
Why was the AD unable to schedule either Missouri, Kentucky. Missi St, Arizona, or even UCF. UConn or Army in 2015.
Instead N St scheduled 1 CUSA, 2 SunBelt and 1 FCS, with wo road games at South Alabama and at Old Dominion. Wow!
Maybe she thought she was scheduling Kentucky and not East Kentucky?
No power 5 Conference program on 2014 and 2014 schedules.
Now that NC St’s schedule is filled through 2019 the AD can take an undeserved vacation.
And maybe NC St should consider moving to the American Conference or CUSA.
State couldn’t hang in the American. ECU trounced them last year. Take a look at their 2014 OOC schedule. The Wolfpeckers are a joke…..
our OOC schedule is bad, agreed. FSU, Clemson, Louisville and UNC sure as hell aint USF, Temple, Tulsa, Tulane and ECU though. Just hope UCF can get out of there. Hope you enjoy your stay in the AAC for like, um, forever?
may UNC should consider making football and basketball players go to class on campus now that would be a move in the right direction boo– yah–
Tampapirate, you do credit to yourself with your knowledge of football, since NC State did not even play ECU last year. They did however have two common opponents, UNC which both obliterated, and UCF who whipped ECU in Greenville, and who State blasted in Orlando. The schools have played 28 times with State holding a 16 to 12 edge. ECU has won the last two meetings, 2010 and 2013, but the largest margin of victory was by State 52-14 in 2004.
To bad ecu will never amount to what nc state is.
Maybe she knows that NC State is going to the SEC and wanted to play a worthy schedule?
I like the way you think
It’s all about the Benjamins!!
Why not extend the series with East Carolina? Maybe it is because ECU trounced them in Raleigh last year??
better watch out the herd is comming
You all don’t know what you are talking about. This year every SEC school is playing an FCS team. 4 SEC schools are also not playing anyone out of conference from a Power 5 conference. That is more than any other Power 5 conference. NC States scheduling is not that much different than other schools. One FCS school each season. Starting in 2016 they will play one power 5 school out of conference every year. We already play Folrida State and Clemson every year so the scheule is already good. The NC state schedules are very similar to many SEC out of conference schedules. So stop talking trash without all of the facts.
Marshall is gonna put a whooping on NC State
It is all about making sure the team had a good chance to get to a bowl game not to try and make a tough schedule that will be worth a top ranking if the developed a program and pulled it off. 2 games from those conf plus the lower ranking teams in the ACC is a pod chance at 5 wins. Then just need to pull of one more for a bowl game.
The AD is setting a clear message what the goals of the program are and as w wolfpack season ticket holder I am truly disappointed to the point it may be time to give up the support.
If this is your attitude, please give up your season tickets. I sit beside a bunch with your same attitude and I’d rather you not be there than bring you negative nelly BS to Carter-Finley each week. We will make sure someone who cares picks up your tickets.
Wolfpeckers are a joke
State will always win six games per year.
I think State is smart to schedule with a bowl bid in mind every year. I don’t care who they play. That gives us one more game that season and extra practice time snd more revenue. Good for recruitment as well.
Just look at our conference schedule to see scheduling of some top teams. Think how demoralizing it is to have a loosing season. With the chance of possibly winning against FSU and Clemson in the same season and top that off with a win over UNC. I think that will get us to a major bowl or possibly the playoffs.
Sure we lost to Clemson but the Pack did not lay down and die. That is good attitude and a sign of good coaching.
PS. I just wish I had the time and funds to go to games at Carter Finley.. If you are a Pack season ticket holder count your blessings and stop being a fair weather fan.
