Maybe the worst game ever or it could be good.
Duquesne doesn’t give 63 scholarships, so this doesn’t help Hawaii get to bowl eligibility
Awesome, great to see a college football game come over to Oz. Just hope they sell out the stadium to make the trip worth it. A bad look for Sydney if they have a lot of empty seats. IMO great to see but maybe wrong choice of cities.
Wrong choice of cities? More like wrong choice of teams. I wouldn’t blame anybody for not wanting to waste their time and money on that garbage team Hawaii fields.
I’m a Boise State fan living in Adelaide Australia, and I follow college football more intently than just about anyone in Australia I feel. I’m not even contemplating going to this game. Would rather spend $2,000 to go to America to watch something like San Jose State vs Fresno State, than spend $500 to go to Sydney to watch Cal vs Hawai’i. If it were an attractive program like say USC, or UCLA, or Oregon at Cal’s expense. I probably go, or if it’s a semi-respectable school like San Diego State, or Air Force, or Nevada (even if I hate them) at Hawai’i expense. I probably go as it’d be a good game. But I’m not going to go watch a game you know will be a Cal 4+ TD win.
If we’re going to get a game, do it right! There’s talk still for a bowl game in Melbourne. At least there we’re getting average teams at worst depending on who’s selected. Much better proposal than this.
In Australia the NFL has a niche following. And a pre-season game in 1999 only got 74k (ANZ Stadium had a capacity of 110k back then pre-olympics). For every 10 NFL fans. Only 1 would even look at college football. If this is even 50% full (40k) I’ll be in shock.
If you don’t like the matchup, blame Baylor.
The game in Australia was supposed to be Cal vs. Baylor, but Baylor backed out for unknown reasons.
Yeah the unknown reason is the would rather play FCS teams and group 5 teams! They need to man up and play a power 5 team in non conference play!!!
Sold 20,000 tickets yesterday in pre-sales, enjoy sitting at home in Adelaide!
NSW Premier Mike Baird said it took the State Government about 12 months to secure the match
Would love to see my New Mexico Lobos play in Australia! We love our Aussie connections with Luc Longley and Hugh Greenwood/Cameron Bairstow in college basketball! Maybe we can get some young Australian studs to come play American football for the Lobos as well!
There maybe a number of aussies who will be the BIG losers when these two teams meet. Sorry to say Aussies lack the ability to love a team win or lose.
With Labor Day being September 7 in 2020, that means FCS plays 11 games. Fordham can play a 12th with the Hawaii Exemption.
If they are smart they will promote it as Rams @ 49ers and not mention either college.
BYU does not play Pac-12 opponents in the last week of November in upcoming 15-week seasons (2019, 2024, 2025) so with Hawaii going non-conference against Army that weekend in 2019 and 2024, perhaps we see BYU vs MWC with the Mountain West left with 11 teams to schedule.
Seems clear that Hawai’i closing down football is less and less likely with each additional contract.
What happened to the games against Kansas?
Kansas asked out of the contract due to their coaching change.
Frankly, I know this is more charity than not, but I feel Hawaii should be a full member in the PAC12. Personally, I feel Hawaii can be a valuable asset to the NCAA, but they need help. There had been some threats by the AD that they might even need to shut down their football program… I feel this would be terrible. The only way I see Hawaii being able to sustain football is if they are able to become full PAC12 members.
Some will argue this will deplete the level of competition in the PAC12, but for once, conference realignment needs to get it right and help pick a athletic department up rather than try to run them into the ground. To complete the addition of Hawaii, San Diego State, Boise State, or UNLV would be ideal.
Then again, this is all my opinion and I am not being overpaid to run college athletics into the ground.
Hawaii and BYU to the PAC 14.
Hawaii will never be in the Pac due to the academic issues. Boise St will never be in the Pac due to not being a research institution. BYU will never be in the Pac due to their religious affiliation. IF the Pac ever expands it will be at the expense of the Big 12 as none of the schools you mentioned would fit the Pac-12’s parameters for inclusion.
Ryan, thanks!! It would be a nice dream come true for us Rainbow Warrior fans.
BYU, but wouldn’t SDSU, be a better fit. They always seem to be on the cusp of better things and perhaps like, TCU, with P5 conference affiliation could draw better coaching and upgrade the talent level.
Jack, yes, very true. They would be a great fit.
Sorry, I meant BYU and SDSU.
On the other hand, Hawaii is a better fit based on research university status which PAC has always valued as much or more than athletic history … WSU is best example of this.
Hawaii would be a good fit because of the television market. Hawaii would add over 1.2 million households to the Pac12 Network.
Not so much. Hawaii can’t even fill their own stadium. Ever. In 2014, Hawaii averaged 27,451, down 11% from 2013. In 2010, when the team went 10-4 with 8 home games, then never filled their 50,000-seat stadium, and averaged just 37,310. If they can’t bother to show up for a home game, why would they bother to turn on a TV to watch one?
BYU will never work as they flat out don’t play any sport on Sunday. The Pac-12 has way too many sporting events that occur on Sundays and they don’t want to work around BYU’s availability.
The Pac-12 could add SDSU in the south and Wyoming or San Jose St in the north. I’d LOVE to see them add Boise St, but apparently the academics don’t blend well. Nevada would be an OK addition, UNLV meager in football but strong in basketball. Maybe the Pac-12 could reach out to Air Force and/or Colorado St?
None of those teams mentioned offer any real benefit to the PAC. They don’t have enough financial endowment nor do they have a significant “footprint” in any TV market. If anything, the PAC would most likely strip the BigXII of Texas & Oklahoma in a crazy scenario before adding any of the above mentioned teams.
