Looks like 13 games are needed to get six home games and four P5 opponents for BYU. Surely will be a P5 and FBS, both in Provo, to accomplish. Two September dates open, so a home P5 game seems realistic, road return game likely not until 2019 to ensure the six home games (in 2018) AD Tom Holmoe wants annually.
13 games will also mean there is no bye week that season with games straight from Sept 2 to November 25.
13 games, 6 P5s (maybe) and one less bye. That’s an intense schedule. We’ve had a hard time getting P5s to come to Provo, especially for the first game of the series but I’m sure Tom will pull it off…along with another FCS, which will be a nice breather for them.
One of the other road games will be changed (likely Fresno). No way BYU gives up a home game. Money and TV wise makes no sense.
There won’t be 7 home games. Already the last P5 in 2017 and FBS in 2018 will not have return games until 2019, which will similarly fill the road slate for 2019.
If a game could be purchased to be moved to Provo I think it would be used to relieve this imbalance rather than provide a 7th home game.
Oh my God. Just return to the Mountain West already.
BYU is not going to return to the MW. They’ve said if they eventually have to return to a conference, they will look for options other than the MWC.
LOL@ Harvey. BYU ain’t ever gonna return to the MWC.
This game could be as elusive as BYU’s trip to WSU, the BYU-USM series and ND’s trip to Provo. Announcements through yesterday are reflected below except for this UNLV game:
True. I was just telling someone today, I don’t think BYU is going to take the Hawaii Exemption and add a 13th game. They are going to have to bump one of their away games and add another home game (most likely an FCS team).

If UNLV gets pretty good soon, these games could turn to be very interesting
So you’re saying they won’t be interesting.
ASU should be able to get 2for1s from these Mountain West schools.
SDSU still doesn’t have 12 games on their 2015 schedule? What is going on there….
Still looking for game, will likely be FCS
San Diego State is the last FBS program still working to complete their 2015 schedule. Why are the Aztecs having such an issue? Multiple FCS programs would love a guarantee game and are open to playing two or three FBS programs in a season.
Or is San Diego State having funding issues and cannot afford to pay for a guarantee game?
Why isn’t the final week: Fres St @ SJSU, CSU@ Wyo, AF @ UNM, Nev @ SDSU, BSU@ UNLV. They should have BSU and Nevada play every year because that’s a longtime rivalry, probably bigger for Nevada than UNLV.
The MWC has 22 games scheduled against Power 5 teams in 2015. In 2013 they were 1-20; last year they picked up 3 wins beating Colorado, Wake Forest and Washington State. Can they win 5 this season-or would that be asking too much?
I agree it should be rivalries, but the pairings should be:
Air Force-New Mexico
Utah St.-Boise St.
Fresno St.-San Jose St.
Hawaii-San Diego St.
It also keeps it in division.
It probably would be that but USU and Hawaii are playing non conference games that weekend, so it messes things up.
The MWC let BYU get USU for the final week 2015 and 2016 in exchange for BYU letting USU out of a 2 for 1 deal. No hassle for the MWC, Hawaii appears to have been granted the right to schedule non-conference the closing week.
Rivalries are good, AF vs CSU is Good but the big Rivalries with AF are non conference, Navy & Army. As a person setting in the stadium, a Sat game is my biggest desire & need. Friday & Thursday games are 90% of time unable to attend. I know TV & MWConf wants the money but empty stands are not good. I can’t even give away my Thur games.
I like SJSU’s schedule. We have rivals Fresno State, San Diego State at home, plus BYU and Boise State. These will really help attendance.
But this has problems. SJSU should host SDSU one year, Fresno State the next year to help build consistency in attendance and interest. Also Fresno State and SJSU should be playing the last week or the next to last week every year. Same for Colorado State-Wyoming.
Building rivalries is key. So they should set up last weekend rivalries. They also should allow schools to have one permanent cross rival. Nevada-Boise State is an obvious one.
It would have been better is the MWC divided by “old” and “new” (WAC), as that would have preserved rivalries.
West: Hawaii, Fresno St, San Jose St, Nevada, Utah St, Boise St
Mountain: San Diego St, UNLV, New Mexico, Colorado St, Wyoming, Air Force
You’d probably want SDSU-Hawaii (reduce travel) and UNLV-Nevada as built in cross rivals in that setup.
Whatever. The MWC clearly has not thought much about building rivalries. But I think they are critical to survival at the G5 level, to built interest without a chance at the Playoffs.
San Jose State is going to struggle this year on run defense again..our defensive lineman are once again in the 260-270 range and that ain’t going to get it done. Just hope there is enough balance on offense to keep the defense off the field.
Shame on Tulane. Their out of touch AD continues to even attempt scheduling “names.” He is a cancer.
Western Michigan University fans welcome this addition to our schedule. We played #4 Michigan State and #1 Ohio State this year.
Too bad that our starting QB Zach Terrell would have graduated by then.
Great job USC, meanwhile Trojan fans complain when an SEC school schedule these teams. Hypo critics
Yeah, dude, these game sucks. I’m embarrassed for them. But at least these games also come during the same seasons we play Notre Dame and Alabama, ND and Texas twice, and ND and BYU, in addition to 9 conference games. Meanwhile SEC schools play 8 conference games and maybe 1 good power 5 neutral site game… Nice try.
I was not trying anything, just stating a fact. You luv to complain when an SEC team schedules these games meanwhile USC does it & you have to use an excuse about (least we are playing Bama, ND & Texas). It does not matter who else USC is playing, just making the point before you complain about what the SEC does, look in the mirror 1st. That’s why I say hypo critic. You can not have it both ways, bashing the SEC while your team does the exact same thing, that’s why I continue to say that ALL TEAMS DO IT. Meanwhile you bash Bama for playing neutral site games & now USC is playing Bama, in a neutral site game, imagine that.
Do you not to see how illogical you sound? USC is playing 11 of 12 power 5 games. And the one non Power 5 game they’re playing are against Group of 5 teams. There is no FCS team.
In 2016, let’s compare Alabama’s schedule vs. USC’s schedule.
Alabama plays 8 conference games (4 home, 4 away), 1 neutral site P5 game, 2 home G5 games, 1 home FCS.
USC plays 9 conference games (4 home, 5 away), 1 neutral site P5 game, 1 home P5 game, 1 home G5 game, 0 FCS.
Comparing Alabama’s schedule to USC’s is a joke. USC has 1 more away game, 2 more P5 games, 0 FCS… USC easily has the hardest schedule in the country. For a team like 2015-16 national champions Alabama not to play a schedule like that is a joke.
How can you not see that?
I was not comparing the scheduling, all conferences are not created equal, we have a difference of opinion, that’s all. It does not bother me that Bama plays in a 8 game conference or that Bama plays 1 FCS & 2 smaller schools.2016 Bama starts with USC & as much as you would like to call them (cupcakes) W.Kentucky just won Con.USA championship & went 12-2, Chattanooga lost in the playoffs in FCS, Kent St is the only team I can not speak for but they are as equal as Utah St is. Just like USC it is extremely hard to get through the season just losing one game or playing for an SEC championship or even a national champion, I understand you think the SEC is a joke but that is your opinion nor will I try to change it but just because you play a in a 9 game conference does not make it harder on you. Good luck to your Trojans next year.
The fact I’m telling you is because the Pac 12 plays 9 games, they will have 6 more losses guaranteed.
Because of that, it makes the conference look weaker than it really is.
If the SEC played 9 games, they would have 7 more losses guaranteed. So instead of playing that, they play a weak Group of 5 team at home. It’s false advertising.
Do you see where I’m coming from?
How does Utah get a home & home with Michigan and Oregon State only gets a road game @ Michigan? and TCU gets a home & home with Ohio State and Oregon State , again only gets a road game. Oregon State’s stadium is the slightly larger than Utah’s and the same size as TCU. What gives?
Truth is Utah never got a ‘home and home’ with Michigan. It was announced as a home and home only after Utah played a ‘one and done’ at Michigan a couple years prior. So really it was a 2-1.
Dream on Jeff. Unlike BYU’s seemingly endless string of 2-for-1s with P5 teams and their upcoming ONE-AND-DONE with Michigan, Utah actually scheduled a HOME-AND-HOME with Big Blue after being invited to join the Pac-12. The 2008 Utah/Michigan game played absolutely no part in Utah’s current HOME-AND-HOME arrangement with the Wolverines.
I imagine buying a 1 and done from a p5 school is pretty expensive, maybe Oregon State wanted a big payday more than 2 beat downs at the hands of the buckeyes?
Oh and how exactly does this article turn into a BYU-Utah pissing match?
Ute truth. Utah has ZERO p5 home games scheduled other than the mandatory fellow p12 teams. This leads anyone with a reasonable mind to conclude Utah has no clout to schedule home/home with p5 conference teams. Please give a shout out when and IF Utah ever schedules a non-conference power 5 team at home. The pre-arranged 2-1 Michigan series does NOT count. Not only does BYU schedule every p12 team home/home, it ALSO gets other p5 home/home match ups…ie; Georgia Tech, Viginia, something Utah can’t get done.
“Not only does BYU schedule every p12 team home/home”
Well that right there proves you don’t know what you’re talking about – they’re doing a one-off with Michigan not unlike Bowling Green or Appalachian State.
Texas is a huge recruiting ground, and playing a game there is of great value, even if it’s “just” Ft. Worth. Oregon doesn’t compare in that regard and the Beavers aren’t on the level of the University of Oregon in terms of exposure.
The Utah/Michigan deal was made as part of the planned scheduling agreement between the B1G and P12.
@ Jeff – You truly are a clueless. BYU doesn’t schedule every Pac-12 team home and home, they have 2 for 1s with Arizona and USC, and have scheduled 2 for 1 with Wisconsin, Texas, and Notre Dame. They also have scheduled one and dones @ Ole Miss, TCU, Michigan, Nebraska, and West Virginia. BYU is a joke and plays a WAC schedule. By the way, Utah scheduled Michigan as part of the planned B1G/Pac-12 scheduling agreement that ended up falling through. Only a complete moron would believe it was a 2 for 1.
You’re drinking a lot of Hater-ade there, Jeff. So many BYU fans are green with envy about the Utes being in the Pac-12.
I guess its never good enough? Tough being a buckeye. Doesnt matter who they schedule, it will never be good enough. They(buckeyes) dont do any different than what the other top 5 teams do. The truth is, the Big ten is strong again and the Buckeyes will play enough top 25 teams from the respected conference.
I think part of it for the big ten and the other 9 game conferences is the years they have 4 home conference games , to make sure the 3 non-conference games are at home, to make sure they get the 7 total home games each year. Especially with the schools with the big stadiums. Probably the years they have the 5 home conference games they will try to fit a road or nuetral game in.
Shep, I said p12….not p5.
Which still proves you don’t know what you are talking about. BYU has scheduled 2 for 1s with Arizona and USC.
UNLV? How about a neutral site with a top Power-5 team
They have 5 B1G road games including Nebraska, Iowa, and Michigan, plus a home OOC with Oklahoma. They also have B1G games Michigan State and Penn State at home. They are hardly ducking tough games. UNLV is the only G5 game scheduled, although I expect a 7th home game against a G5 opponent. That makes 10 P5 games
They replace North Carolina with Oregon State in 2018 also, which is hardly a easy game, and they travel to TCU still. So 11 P5 opponents, and one home game to be scheduled, probably a G5. Again no ducking here.
Frankly most of the P5 are not ducking the tougher schedules. Everyone seems to be adding a P5 OOC game or two.
Ute truth, show me evidence of a 2-1 with Arizona. I’ve seen a 1-1-1 in all media reports. Want to debate the neutrality of the Phoenix game ? I have a feeling if the university of Illinois was playing Notre Dame in Chicago one would not think of it as a home game for Illinois simply because it’s in the state of Illinois. I expect more BYU fans attend.
True the USC matchup is the only 2-1 scheduled, however, your memory is selective and you are forgetting about BYU’s home/home with USC in the early 2000s, something Utah could never get done.
LOL. You actually believe that crap. Sorry, but that “neutral” game in Phoenix will draw many more Wildcat fans than it will Cougars, at least 2:1 but most likely 3:1 or 4:1 in favor of Arizona.
And the fact that BYU could get a home and home with USC as a member of the MWC and is now taking 2 for 1s from them should tell you just how far BYU has fallen in the eyes of P5 teams.
By the way, Utah has home and homes with USC from 2011 through FOREVER! Hahahahahaha!!!!! Sucks to be you guys!
Any idea what Ohio State is paying Oregon State for this one? Guarantees for FCS schools seem to go in the $300,000-$500,000 range, G5 seem to get more. I think that I remember Ohio State paying Colorado $1.4M. Can’t be cheap to pay a P5 school to travel that far.
Ute truth, look, another BYU/pac12 home and home series announced today! I think that makes all league teams which includes September and November match ups. Goes to show Utah’s only claim to fame is their p12 schedule which is not that big of a deal. Once again, wake me up if Utah ever schedules an out of conference p5 home/home series.
Looking forward to an OSU-OSU game! :)
