So does this mean we will see FCS schedules in the near future?
Can you at least include North Dakota State schedules. They are better than half of the FBS.
but does anyone really want to take the time to keep up with the schedules for ALL of the FCS teams and build a site for the 5 people who would give a rat’s a$$ about any teams beyond the one that they follow.
I’d like to see FCS schedules too!
This fills up Idaho’s 2017 schedule,by the way.
Is Idaho dropping back to FCS? When?
After the 2017 season.

This is a cute article, I would’ve kept out A&M vs UTSA since this is their 1st ever meeting.
If you watched the 2014 Georgia Southern @ Georgia Tech game or better yet, if you attended the game, then you would know the ACC referees took the game out of the players hands with a terrible reversal of an ON THE FIELD call (requires indisputable evidence…it’s still being disputed). Georgia Southern was the better team that day and still has the more dynamic roster. Thank you Paul Johnson and the Tech AD for not being scared (UGAg) and rescheduling the Eagles…GS won’t leave it in question this go around. It would be great for the state if GS and Tech continued to schedule a game (maybe a H&H once Paulson Stadium is expanded to 30k) every other year. Athletically, as of late, the two schools are closer to peers than big brother-little brother.
Georgia has played Georgia Southern six times since 1992, Georgia Tech only once. I don’t think Georgia is scared of GS.
Interesting that 5 of those 6 times were when Georgia Southern had 63 scholarships. The 6th game was a carry over from GS’s FCS days and Georgia elected to move the game from 2016 to 2015 probably because they didn’t want an additional year of FBS recruiting for GS. Georgia was gifted that win last year and every dawg fan knows it. For both parties, it is understood that Georgia no longer wants any part in scheduling GS and frankly that’s fine by me.
Don’t worry Kevin Kelly, that’s just GS non-sense talk. They told GSU that they’d never beat GS – but in the just the second meeting (last year) GSU gave them their worst defeat in the history of Paulson High School County Stadium, The glory days of GS are behind them. The newsflash to GS is that they are the #4 team in the state of Georgia and they think that they are #1.
Georgia Tech got up big in that game and then let up and allowed Georgia Southern back in, the Eagles were far from the better team that day.
Georgia Southern’s coach was on his way out and focused on a million dollar salary…way to go. How’d that bowl game work out for the mighty Panthers? Let’s compare some numbers for a minute…17-53 (129th in FBS) vs. 375-200-10 (14th in FBS)…0 D1 National Championships vs. 6 D1 National Championships (most all-time)…0 D1 Conference Titles vs. 11 D1 Conference Titles. WHEW! I can certainly understand why a Panther fan (those exist?) would cling like hell to that win against Georgia Southern! Run along now, let us men get back to it.
GS has never beat UGA – GS has never beat GT – GS is 50/50 against GSU.
So your excuse is that GS got pounded at home by GSU cause your coach was dreaming about a real job? Really? That’s all it took for the mighty Beagles to lose at home? A coach’s daydream? All that tripe that GS spews about GSU and you got pounded in just the second effing year by a five year old football team? Fact is that Richt got fired because he almost lost to GS so that should tell you about how little respect there is for the GS product. So maybe GS needs to realize that they may start to fall behind KSU or Mercer. You guys have such an incredible false sense of entitlement from all those Pee-Wee league trophies. Probably ought to go on back to FCS Pee-Wee league! How about that Capt GAyTAy?
The Real GSU has played UGA and GT once with equal scholarships. Do you understand that having 22 less scholarships is a disadvantage? Once the playing field was made even, the Real GSU lost by a combined 10 points in their first outings with 85 scholarships. Again, I appreciate GT rescheduling the Real GSU unlike UGAg (I bet you’re a UGAg fan before a GAy St fan). Do you understand that when a head coach does not prep their team for a game that the team is unprepared? Big concepts here. Do you have any facts or just opinions? Richt was on the hot seat at the start of that season and the season before that…try to keep up. The fact that you recognize KSU and Mercer says a lot about where you view GAy St. Pee-Wee trophies…you’re talking about Division 1 National Championships. Do you understand that prior to the College Football Playoff, the FCS Playoff was the highest form of a college football playoff in existence? Oh but computers picking two teams worked out every time. The Real GSU should go back to FCS? You mean the Real GSU with the 18-7 FBS record (.720)? How about GAy St with the 7-30 FBS record (.189). This is too easy man, c’mon. (A) Why would GAy St field a football team and (B) why would ANYONE be a fan???? LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!!!
Southern has never beaten Georgia and never will.
The “REAL” GSU just beat the GaSo clown big talkers AGAIN! GAyTAy!!!
So GaSo now has a LOSING record against GSU along with
never beating UGA and GT! So just go STFU !!!!!!!!!!
what about the Brigham Young-Utah State game or the Notre Dame-Navy game?
Neither BYU nor USU are a Power 5. And Notre Dame and Navy aren’t in the same state.
Matt probably meant to say the BYU-Utah game. Utah is a P5, but BYU is not. The summary would read something like this:
When: Saturday, Sept. 10, 5:30pm MT
Where: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, UT
All-Time Series Leader: Utah, 58-34-4 (62.5%)
Last-Five: Utah, 5-0 (100%)
Utah has dominated its little brother, BYU, over the last 13 meetings (10-3, 77%). And they will certainly do so again this fall.
how would BYU qualify as a “Big” brother?
Bill, Utah would be the big brother
Someone asked that on Twitter, FBSchedules replied “BYU generally considered P5 so not included.”
BYU fits the P5 requirement for scheduling for most if not all conferences. The SEC looks at BYU as a P5…last time I checked the SEC is the premier program in College Football.
good article ….but i would say Georgia Southern has a much better chance of beating Georgia Tech than many of the games you have ranked as more likely. I don’t think very many people would be surprised is Georgia Southern wins that game.
Utah had to be invited to a conference to be considered P5. BYU did it on their own.
BYU is considered by some to be a P5 “for scheduling purposes.” But we’re not actually a P5, since we don’t belong to a P5 conference. That’s why it’s so important for us to get into the Big XII…the fate and viability of our football program rests on it. If we don’t get in and become an actual P5, our future looks no better than that of New Mexico State.
By that thinking, Toledo would also be considered a Power 5 Power Team, since it can beat 1/2 or more of teams from Power 5 Conferences…
Little brother = going on every web site possible to talk about how Utah should really be a big brother
I think ECU is NC State’s big brother when it comes to football.
ECU has not only won 3 out of 5, but 9 out of the last 15.
Go Pirates! Argh!
What about Penn State vs Pitt this year?
Pitt is P5.
PSU is B1G/Power 5 also
I don’t think many Ohio State fans see any MAC schools as “little brother.” The only school that would make sense to have that designation would be U of Cincinnati.
Toledo, Ohio and BGSU, Ohio are both vastly better than Cincinnati, Ohio !!! As is Ohio Bobcats
Where is Alabama-Auburn? Auburn is the ultimate “Little Brother” who lives to beat Big Brother, Alabama. Alabama lives to win national championships; Auburn lives to beat Alabama.
When they say little brother, I think they actually mean LITTLE BROTHER! Auburn is not a little brother to Bama, same conference, same league, Auburn has done their fair share of butt whooping on Bama in the past. If that was the case then the article would have Michigan vs Michigan St.
FSU is also UF’s big brother.
Awesome, great to see a college football game come over to Oz. Just hope they sell out the stadium to make the trip worth it. A bad look for Sydney if they have a lot of empty seats. IMO great to see but maybe wrong choice of cities.
Wrong choice of cities? More like wrong choice of teams. I wouldn’t blame anybody for not wanting to waste their time and money on that garbage team Hawaii fields.
Howdy! I would have sworn I’ve been to this great site before neelvthreess after looking at many of the post We realized it’s a new comer to me. Anyhow, I’m definitely happy I ran across it and I’m going to be bookmarking and also checking back again often!
I’m a Boise State fan living in Adelaide Australia, and I follow college football more intently than just about anyone in Australia I feel. I’m not even contemplating going to this game. Would rather spend $2,000 to go to America to watch something like San Jose State vs Fresno State, than spend $500 to go to Sydney to watch Cal vs Hawai’i. If it were an attractive program like say USC, or UCLA, or Oregon at Cal’s expense. I probably go, or if it’s a semi-respectable school like San Diego State, or Air Force, or Nevada (even if I hate them) at Hawai’i expense. I probably go as it’d be a good game. But I’m not going to go watch a game you know will be a Cal 4+ TD win.
If we’re going to get a game, do it right! There’s talk still for a bowl game in Melbourne. At least there we’re getting average teams at worst depending on who’s selected. Much better proposal than this.
In Australia the NFL has a niche following. And a pre-season game in 1999 only got 74k (ANZ Stadium had a capacity of 110k back then pre-olympics). For every 10 NFL fans. Only 1 would even look at college football. If this is even 50% full (40k) I’ll be in shock.
If you don’t like the matchup, blame Baylor.
The game in Australia was supposed to be Cal vs. Baylor, but Baylor backed out for unknown reasons.
Yeah the unknown reason is the would rather play FCS teams and group 5 teams! They need to man up and play a power 5 team in non conference play!!!
Sold 20,000 tickets yesterday in pre-sales, enjoy sitting at home in Adelaide!
NSW Premier Mike Baird said it took the State Government about 12 months to secure the match
Would love to see my New Mexico Lobos play in Australia! We love our Aussie connections with Luc Longley and Hugh Greenwood/Cameron Bairstow in college basketball! Maybe we can get some young Australian studs to come play American football for the Lobos as well!
There maybe a number of aussies who will be the BIG losers when these two teams meet. Sorry to say Aussies lack the ability to love a team win or lose.
P12, BigX, B1G are quickly getting scheduled up, while the SEC scheduling languishes.
SEC still needs five non-FCS games in 2016, 11-13 non-FCS games in 2017, and 27 non-FCS games in 2018.
Need non-FCS OOC games:
SEC – 2016 (5) / 2017 (11-13) / 2018 (27) / 2019 (24-25)
ACC – 2016 (5) / 2017 (9-11) / 2018 (12) / 2019 (12-13)
B1G – 2016 (0) / 2017 (8) / 2018 (9) / 2019 (17)
P12 – 2016 (2) / 2017 (2) / 2018 (7) / 2019 (7)
B12 – 2016 (2) / 2017 (2) / 2018 (2) / 2019 (6)
AAC – 2016 (1) / 2017 (7) / 2018 (13) / 2019 (10)
MWC – 2016 (2-3) / 2017 (6-9) / 2018 (9-12) / 2019 (13+)
CUSA – 2016 (1) / 2017 (6) / 2018 (14) / 2019 (19)
MAC – 2016 (1) / 2017 (6) / 2018 (8) / 2019 (20)
SunB – 2016 (1) / 2017 (9) / 2018 (12) / 2019 (21)
ND – 2016 (0) / 2017 (0) / 2018 (2) / 2019 (2)
BYU – 2016 (0-1) / 2017 (0-1) / 2018 (1-2) / 2019 (2-3)
Army – 2016 (1) / 2017 (1) / 2018 (1) / 2019 (2-3)
Mass – 2016 (3-4) / 2017 (1) / 2018 (4) / 2019 (8)
If this were an SEC team doing this, the comments would be full of hate. Instead, this was posted four days ago and there is one comment. All teams schedule cupcakes. ALL teams.
Joe, your argument is a little incomplete. Yes, all P5 Schools play “cupcakes”, but the problem is the SEC loads up on a higher percentage of “cupcakes”. You may need to take off your sun glasses or blinders or whatever it is that impairing your vision and try to see the whole picture. I really don’t thing there’s as much hate as you would want, just more frustration.
The SEC doesn’t ‘load up’ on a higher percentage of cupcakes. That’s absurd. The SEC follows the basic formula everyone has followed for the last thirty years. One power five, two other Division I-A schools that they should beat, and one FCS school. Sure, there are exceptions, but that’s pretty much the way most everyone has done it for a good while now.
Oh, and then the SEC goes and plays eight teams from the best conference in football.
But don’t take my word for it. Take the NFL’s word for it. The SEC has more players drafted than any other league… That’s a pretty good measuring stick that is completely unbiased. In fact, it’s probably the best measuring stick because the NFL has a lot to loose when a draft pick doesn’t work out.
But hate on, haters… The SEC is still best and you know it.
Almost all teams, but not all. UCLA, USC, and Notre Dame have never played an FCS (former I-AA) team in football.
Please don’t start writing articles like this. Stick to scheduling.
Whenever there is scheduling news, Kevin, Amy and the gang cover it. This is reasonable content for a slow week.
Thanks for the great article Amy,
Agreed,enjoyed this quite a bit.
My only question is why Georgia Tech is not considered here.
They used the US News Rankings and took the Top 10 FBS-playing Universities. The next few would have been: Wake Forest, Michigan, North Carolina, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Wisconsin, Penn St., Florida, Miami (FL), and Washington.
Because Georgia Tech is not ranked among the Top 25 schools according to USN. Therefore, they do not qualify for this list despite fielding an FBS school.
Re-read the intro again to see the qualifications for being included in this list.
I would find a bottom ranked list interesting as well.
US News doesn’t really rank top-to-bottom. After the top schools, they have Tier 2 and Tier 3, and those aren’t ranked, they’re just all in a bunch.
If you have another slow week, could you expand this to a top 25 list?
Great article and thanks for taking notice of the rivalries between some of the best schools in the country. Northwestern is deliberately scheduling more games against peer schools that share this academic commitment. Our students want to compete both in class and on the field.
No Boston College, No Georgia Tech. I like the premise of the article just don’t agree with all the schools in the article
Apparently you didn’t read the intro to the chart:
“Of the Top 25 schools in the USN National University Rankings, 10 of them field FBS football teams.”
Neither Boston College nor Georgia Tech are ranked in the top 25 school listing, and therefore are not included on this list.
Read the article again, and follow the link to USN to find out where BC and GT rank.
Great concept but completely bogus rankings after the obvious top two, ND and USC. Vanderbilt, Duke and Virginia all have historically weak teams but enjoy high rankings here because they only play each other. Next to Rice, they are clearly the three worst teams on this list by any plausible measure. Only the most ignorant fool would say that Vandy has had a better football team over the years than UCLA! If these two schools had played each other for the past 50 years, I guarantee you that UCLA would have won at least 48 of the 50 games (and the Bruins would have been favored to win all 50, but I’m assuming a couple of upsets).
Here is the correct list, with the schools also divided into three very obvious tiers:
[Big gap here]
[Another gap here]
8-9. Duke-Virginia (take your pick)
As Eric the Wildcat pointed out, Northwestern deserves credit for going out of its way to schedule these games. Since 2012, NU has won five of six (with two other games cancelled), beating Notre Dame, Stanford, Cal, Duke and Vanderbilt while losing the return match vs. Cal. Sadly, after losing to NU in both 2010 and 2012, the cowardly Commodores bought their way out of rematches in 2013 and 2014, in order to play football weaklings Austin Peay and UMass instead.
you need to re-read the article, they didn’t start with fb rankings they started with USN rankings of top 25 schools from academic perspectives, then identified those with an FBS fb team, of which there was only 10, then ranked those 10 by the records against each other.
No Michigan? NU is my favorite as my alma mater, but didn’t beat Michigan a top 20 school.
Michigan is ranked (USNWR) 29 – not in the top 25, as per the stated qualifications
Hard to believe neither West Point, Navy, nor Air Force are included in this list of top “brain schools”
You misread the article.
Actually, Grady has a point. It’s clear that these rankings are derived from a set of National University Rankings that do not include the federal academies, I think Grady’s observation makes sense. Just because the Air Force Academy, West Point, and Annapolis choose not to participate in those ranking systems doesn’t mean they’re not among the very best of collegiate institutions in this country.
Grady makes a good point, but the academies didn’t choose to not be ranked by USN, USN excludes the academies because of their political nomination and appointment criteria. They would certainly be top 25 otherwise as they are in other publications
In what world is Cal a #20 ranked university? It is the #1 public university in the country. Are all of the rest of these private?
Oh, please. The only one of those schools that belongs in a “Brain Bowl” is Stanford.
I root for Stanford, but your comment is laughable.
Great article! How about a Brain Bowl All Star team based on 1st team, 2nd, etc. All-Americans?? Hope to see it here!
Not sure where these academic ranking come from, but of the ranking service MOST used in academics, the ARWU, the top 10 ranked universities in the WORLD for 2016 are:
8. Cal Tech
10. University of Chicago
Notre Dame? 201 – 300 (when you’re *that* low, they start grouping by 100’s, lol)
Calling Notre Dame an “academic institution” is just plain embarrassing. The ONLY two FBS schools in the Top 10 of academics are Stanford & Cal.
